And Coral Springs Charter’s are Broward Tennis Players of Year

Blake Edwards and Chloe Fouhety were the two best tennis players at one of Broward County’s tennis powerhouses and were key to their teams making a deep playoff run, with St. Thomas Aquinas’ girls defending their Class 3A state title and boys finishing as state runner-up.

Coral Springs Charter’s Juhnyee See, meanwhile, defended her Class 2A individual singles title at state.

The trio, as a result, are the Miami Herald’s Broward Tennis Players of the Year. Edwards wins the boys’ title outright, while Fouhety and See are splitting the honor on the girls’ side.

Edwards, a junior, went 11-2 on the season in singles and played on the

No. 1 line for both singles and doubles for the Raiders, the only boys’ team from the county to make it all the way to the state title game after beating Lake Buena Vista 4-1 in the quarterfinals and Barron Collier 4-3 in the semifinals before falling 4-1 to Wesley Chapel Wiregrass Ranch in the title match.

Fouhety, a freshman, went 12-1 in singles, with her lone loss coming in the Class 3A overall singles championship to Seminole Osceola’s Lyla Messler. Fouhety won her first three singles matches at state in straight sets, dropping just six total games over six sets. She St. Petersburg 4-1 in the semifinals and Auburndale 5-0 in the final.

See, meanwhile, is a Broward Co-Girls’ Player of the Year for a second consecutive year after repeating as the Class 2A individual singles state champion. The junior cruised through her first two matches at state — 6-1, 6-0 over Englewood Lemon Bay’s Parker Zautcke, 6-0-6-0 over Jacksonville Stanton’s Katie Wong — before facing a pair of local opponents for her final two matches. See beat Somerset Academy’s Patricia Acra 6-3, 6-3 in the individual final to advance to the overall final where she then beat Gulliver Prep’s Sophia Varabyeva 6-3, 6-3 to defend her state title.
