More retro rewinds
“Happy Days” (MeTV, Sunday, Dec. 17): A mini-marathon of four holiday stories from the nostalgic sitcom begins with the Season 2 episode “Guess Who’s Coming to Christmas,” in which Fonzie (Henry Winkler) — who will be alone for the yuletide otherwise — is invited to celebrate with the Cunningham family. One might think he’d jump at the opportunity, but he bides his time in responding, which is both surprising and troubling to Richie (Ron Howard).
“Star Trek: The Motion Picture” (MGM+ Drive-In, Tuesday, Dec. 19): The success of “Star Wars” prompted the powers that be at Paramount Pictures to give big-screen treatment to creator-producer Gene Roddenberry’s legendary 1960s sci-fi series. William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy lead the original cast again as Kirk and Spock, as the retrofitted starship Enterprise heads deep into the galaxy to confront an artificial intelligence that has been destroying other vessels. Robert Wise directed the 1979 film; several of the movie sequels follow.
“The 25th Annual A Home for the Holidays” (CBS, Friday, Dec. 22): Though this is a new special, it’s also classic in a way, since it’s the latest edition of a seasonal franchise that has advocated for adoption and moved audiences for a quarter-century. Celebrities — including Katharine McPhee (this year’s host), Pentatonix, CeCe Winans and Gavin DeGraw — perform and offer true stories of youngsters who have found homes with loving families who have brought them in, and a box of tissues is a virtual requirement for watching the traditionally heartwarming program.
