More retro rewinds

“Skyfall” (HBO Signature, Sunday, Dec. 31): There will be plenty of James Bond on New Year’s Eve, with both this channel and Cinemax scheduling multiple-title marathons from the spy franchise … plus MGM Drive-In weighing in with “Casino Royale,” the 1967 spoof rather than the more serious 2006 version that introduced Daniel Craig as a new Bond. Two of his 007 movies later, Craig fronted one of the most acclaimed adventures in the series, this 2012 release that puts Bond out of action for a while after being injured on the job. He returns to the Secret Service to protect boss M (Judi Dench) from old enemy Silva (enjoyable scene-chewer Javier Bardem); the title song, performed by Adele, earned an Oscar.

“Friends” (TBS, Sunday, Dec. 31): An episode titled “The One With the Lottery” might be an optimistic one to watch on New Year’s Eve, since it deals with a contest that offers a huge jackpot. Of course, this show’s gang indulges in buying tickets … and actually overindulges, all the while debating what their chances of winning actually might be.

“Hour of the Gun” (HDNet Movies, Sunday, Dec. 31): One of the most mature Westerns of its decade, this 1967 drama revisits the association of two of the most legendary figures of the genre – Wyatt Earp (James Garner, reunited with “The Great Escape” director John Sturges) and Doc Holliday (Jason Robards) – in the aftermath of the famous gunfight at the O.K. Corral. Also starring Robert Ryan, the film includes an early role for Jon Voight, who would gain fame as a much different kind of cowboy (a “Midnight” one) a couple of years later.
