Rays score twice in 10th, shut out Yankees; Brewers rout Cardinals

-

Jose Caballero hit a tiebreaking double in the 10th inning as the visiting Tampa Bay Rays earned a 2-0 victory over the New York Yankees on Saturday afternoon.

The Rays won for the seventh time in 11 games by putting together a rally against Caleb Ferguson (0-3).

Caballero lined a fly ball that went over center fielder Alex Verdugo’s head and automatic runner Richie Palacios easily scored from second base. After stealing third, Caballero trotted home with Tampa Bay’s second run on a single by former New York catcher Ben Rortvedt.

Jason Adam (1-0) pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to set up for Caballero. Adam retired Juan Soto on a fly ball to the left field warning track, struck out Aaron Judge and retired Anthony Rizzo on another fly ball.

Garrett Cleavinger pitched a perfect 10th to earn his first career save.

Following a pregame ceremony to honor newly retired radio play-byplay announcer John Sterling, the Yankees were dealt their fourth defeat in six games. New York also got blanked for the third time this season and second time at home.

New York starter Nestor Cortes navigated through trouble at times and allowed six hits in seven innings. The left-hander struck out a season-high nine hitters, did not walk a batter and pitched his second-longest outing of the season.

Tampa Bay’s Zach Eflin matched Cortes, allowing three hits in six innings. Eflin allowed two hits to Soto and fanned Judge three times.

Cortes was helped by center fielder Trent Grisham’s strong throw to get Rene Pinto trying to advance on Yandy Diaz’s single to end the third.

He struck out the side in the fourth and stranded two runners apiece in the fifth and sixth.

Twins 4, Tigers 3: Bailey Ober logged six strong innings and host Minnesota held off Detroit.

Ober (1-1) was perfect until Matt Vierling singled with one out in the fifth. The right-hander fanned the next two batters he faced, though, two of his six strikeouts on the afternoon.

Steven Okert came on in the seventh for Ober, who yielded one run on two hits and a walk.

Minnesota relied on small-ball to get on the board, scoring its runs on three sacrifice flies and a fielder’s choice-grounder.

Cardinals starting pitcher Miles Mikolas (1-3) allowed five runs on nine hits in 4 innings as St. Louis suffered its third straight loss.

Milwaukee took a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Hoskins followed Contreras’ single with a 399-foot homer.

The Cardinals cut their deficit to 2-1 in the bottom of the inning when Willson Contreras walked and scored on Nolan Arenado’s double.

ELSEWHERE Mets:

New York placed starting catcher Francisco Alvarez on the 15-day injured list with a left thumb sprain on Saturday. Alvarez, 22, appeared to sustain the injury in the second inning of the Mets’ 9-4 victory against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday.

While running the bases, he stumbled while going around first, then planted his left hand in the ground to stabilize himself before continuing to second base. The team scheduled an MRI exam. In 16 games this season, Alvarez is batting .236 with a home run and eight RBI.

Twins: Minnesota relief pitcher Daniel Duarte will undergo seasonending elbow surgery on May 8, the team said Saturday. It has not been determined whether he will have Tommy John surgery or internal brace surgery. The type of procedure

will impact his return date in 2025. Duarte was a non-roster invitee in spring training and made the team.

Tigers: Detroit placed third baseman Gio Urshela on the 10-day injured list due to a right hamstring strain. Urshela, 32, exited the Tigers’ 5-4 win at Minnesota on Friday in the second inning after running out a groundout and hobbling off the field. He later told reporters that he has a Grade 1 strain and could be out for two weeks.

Dodgers: Los Angeles placed right-hander Kyle Hurt on the 15-day injured list due to right shoulder inflammation.

Hurt, 25, made his first start in the major leagues on Tuesday, and in three games this season is 0-1 with a 1.35 ERA, one walk and three strikeouts in 6 innings.

He made his MLB debut last September for his lone appearance last season, when he was selected the 2023 Branch Rickey Minor League Pitcher of the Year.
