Dillard’s Coleman excels at regional track championships

- BY DAVE BROUSSEAU

Not many high school seniors have an athletic career like Dillard’s Christiana Coleman.

Already a Class 3A state cross country champion in 2023 and a four-time winner at the BCAA Track and Field championships in early April, she’s poised for more gold medals at the Class 3A State Championships on May 17 at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville.

On Wednesday at the Regional 4-3A regional meet at Ansin Sports Complex, the University of Florida signee won the 1,600 (5:01.92), was third in the 800 (2:12.48), was part of the winning 3,200 relay team (9:26.98) and finished the night in second place in the 3,200 (10:59.04).

On display was how Coleman improved since last year’s regional when she ran 11:14.35.

There were no surprises as to which team won regional titles. In Class 4A, the Columbus boys and Miami Southridge girls finished on top, while the Belen Jesuit boys and Miami Northwestern girls were regional champs in 3A.

Tyra Cox of Miami Northwestern was a winner in the 100 (11.47), 200 (22.91) and 400 (52.73). Her time in the 100 bettered her previous best of 11.75 she set in the district meet. The time she ran in the 200 surpassed her previous personal best of 23.47, as she did in the 400, which was 53.53.

There were several athletes in both classifications who were multiple winners.

In addition to Cox in Class 3A, Lauren Kirby of Somerset won the shot put (44-7) and discus (150-5). Joseph Socarras of Belen Jesuit was victorious in the 800 (1:51.84) and 1,600 (4:13.37).

Among the Class 4A winners was Takiyah Ferguson of Miami Southridge as she won the 100 hurdles (13.99) and 400 hurdles (1:02.61). Teammate Meara Rasul won the 100 (11.64) and 200 (23.89) meter dashes.

Flanagan’s Shamar Henry was a winner in the 1,600 (4:21.34) and 3,200 (9:31.82). Shaquille Young of Piper was also a double winner with victories in the shot put (50-9.5) and discus (145-7).

Shaddai Carter of Miami Columbus won the long jump (23-7.5) and triple jump (40-5.25).
