Ford, Nissan and Toyota issue recalls

- BY CHRISTOPHER JENSEN

Ford Motor is recalling about 200,000 vehicles in five actions in North America for problems including air bags that might not deploy in a crash, possible fires and a steering defect that was not corrected in a previous recall, the automaker said this week. Ford said it was aware of one accident, but no injuries.

Nissan is also recalling about 6,200 Infiniti Q50 and Q70 Hybrid sedans from the 2014 model year for a software defect, and Toyota is recalling nearly 5,700 cars from the 2014 model year for a steering problem.

The five Ford recalls bring the automaker’s total number this year to 35, with almost 4.3 million vehicles affected, Kelli Felker, a company spokeswoman, wrote in an email. Last year, Ford issued 16 recalls affecting almost 1.2 million vehicles.

The largest recall involves about 135,000 Ford Flex wagons and F-150 pickup trucks from the 2014 model year, including about 113,000 in the United States, because the passenger side air bag may not deploy in a crash.

The second-largest recall, involving a steering problem, covers about 38,600 Ford Crown Victoria, Lincoln Town Car and Mercury Grand Marquis sedans from the 2005 model year for a pos- sible loss of steering control. Ford said it learned through its “internal process” that some vehicles recalled last year might not have been properly repaired.

The other Ford recalls cover three models: about 27,600 Transit Connect vans from the 2014 model year; about 90 Transit full-size vans from the 2015 model year; and about 950 F-150 pickups from the 2014 model year.

Nissan’s Infiniti luxury cars are being recalled in two actions. The first covers about 800 Q50 and Q70 sedans from the 2014 model year in the United States because the automatic transmission casing may have been damaged and can crack, according to a report Nissan posted Tuesday on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website. In addition, about 5,400 Q50 and Q70 Hybrid sedans from the 2014 model year are being recalled because a software problem can cause the electric motor to stop functioning.

The Toyota recall covers about 5,650 Camry, Camry Hybrid, Avalon and Avalon Hybrid sedans from the 2014 model year in the United States, the automaker said in a news release. Toyota said “an improperly manufactured bolt hole where it connects to the ball joint” could result in a loss of steering control.
