Man suspected of shooting 3 people is in custody, police say; 15-year-old girl is missing
A suspect in the shooting of three people in Miami Gardens on Friday turned himself in after a citywide search, police said.
William Brice, 21, was being questioned Friday night at the Miami Gardens Police Department. Police said he was identified by anonymous tipsters. Police then called Brice’s family members, who brought him to the police station.
“We’ll know more when the suspect is fully interviewed,” Miami Gardens police spokesman Carlos Austin said Friday night. “As of right now he has not been arrested but is being detained.”
Brice was believed to have been on the run with a 15-year-old girl who is related to the three victims. Police said it is still unclear if he was with the teen but said the girl was not present when he turned himself in.
The early-morning confrontation outside an abandoned home on Northwest 30th Avenue and East Bunche Park Drive created chaos as police issued an order for residents to remain indoors and at least three area schools were placed on lockdown.
Police said the three victims, who did not suffer life-threatening injuries, are the juvenile’s mother, aunt, and uncle. One of them was able to take a picture of the suspect with a cellphone before being shot.
Police identified the missing teen as Janiya Johnson, 15, and said family members determined she was at the home on East Bunche Park Drive from GPS coordinates taken from an ankle bracelet she is wearing. Police were not certain whether she was with the suspect, who ran away after the shootings.
Police had posted the suspect’s picture on the department’s Twitter site and tweeted that they were “actively looking for the subject in the Bunche Park area. If you see him, call 911 immediately. Subject armed and dangerous. Stay indoors.”
