Fish and chips, fried sausage anyone? English comfort food at Chippy

- BY CONNIE OGLE cogle@miamiherald.com

Traveling to England for the best of British comfort food is probably out of the question right now. But you can eat all the authentic fish and chips you want right here in Miami.

From British chef Justin Brown comes The Chippy, a pop-up at Balans Bar & Brasserie in Mary Brickell Village, joining a host of other Miami restaurants that opened during the COVID-19 pandemic. Here, you can try Brown’s beer batter recipe on cod or haddock. Add a lemon and some fries, and you’ve got the British comfort food you need.

And yes, the fish and the chips come wrapped in newspaper, hopefully one containing this story.

If fish isn’t what you crave, you have other choices: Battered Proper Pork Sausage, for example (The Chippy does not serve Battered Improper Pork Sausage that we know of.) There are also battered chicken strips, plus a Wagyu cheeseburger salad. Brown and

Co. will even batter up a Snickers or Mars Bar for you, though more traditional palates might prefer a Sticky Toffee Pudding with Toffee Sauce.

Brown, who came to Miami after 15 years in England and Europe working with such chefs as Jamie Oliver and Robert Clayton, says he seeks out the best local vendors for his fish.

“The city has a wealth of excellent suppliers I’ve had the privilege of getting to know, and my discovery in the quality of fish and produce encouraged me to create an even broader selection beyond my signature fish and chips,” he said in a press release. “The Chippy was originally a concept created in Amsterdam that has become a huge success, and I believe Miami also has an appetite for something genuine and unique from England.”
