Grateful for those things that Trump did right

- – Robert E. Panoff, Pinecrest

I understand it is the style to go ballistic on and completely trash President Trump, but as he leaves office, I thank him for the many positive things he did for our country.

I thank him for making the United States energy independent; for the First Step Act; for moving our embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem; for initiating a process wherein our trade relationship with China can be adjusted to reduce and/or eliminate certain long-standing negative aspects and strengthening our presence in the South China Sea.

I thank him for the trade agreement with Mexico and Canada; for revising our policy toward Iran; for Opportunity Zones; for supporting charter schools; for increased federal investigative assistance to cities like Chicago, which have severe gang violence and killings.

I thank him for the pre-COVID-19 economy and the historically record low unemployment during that time; for Operation Warp Speed; for readjusting the financial burden of the cost of NATO to insist that European members pay their fair share; for eliminating two terrorist leaders as bad as Osama Bin Laden.

Last, I thank him for increasing the sanctions on Russia; cleaning up the problems in VA hospitals; and strengthening our military.

Trump’s demeanor was frequently grating and inappropriate. His Tweets boorish and juvenile. But he did shake up a very entrenched, arrogant, entitled, self-possessed political establishment, to the point of accomplishing some long overdue things that had been promised by prior presidents, and Congress, for decades.

I wish him well and hope he enjoys his retirement. I also hope he does not tweet from retirement. Enough is enough.
