CIVIC DUTY

-

When Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas yelled, “Freedom” at the C-PAC convention in Orlando last weekend, his meaning was clear: freedom is being free from responsibility. A free man is only responsible for himself.

What does a free man owe his constituents?

Nothing. Cruz ran on the philosophy that government is the problem; the less we have, the more freedom we enjoy.

Government binds us to society. We are responsible for paying taxes, obeying laws, and performing our civic duties. Release from government is to free us from our obligations to society. Imagine a political philosophy that frees us from responsibility, where we can focus on serving our own needs, leaving others to do the same.

Cruz’s notion of freedom is at loggerheads with responsible government, and fatal to society. – Phil Beasley,
