Gulliver, Ransom Everglades sweep districts in water polo

The Gulliver Prep and Ransom Everglades water polo teams swept girls’ and boys’ district titles.

The Gulliver Prep teams won District 16 titles.

The undefeated Gulliver Prep girls’ team (13-0) recently won its 15th district title, beating Cutler Bay 15-3. In its history, the Raiders won nine state titles with four runner-up finishes, including 2017.

Against Cutler Bay, senior captain Alissa Pascual led with 4 goals,4 assists and 3 steals. Sophomore Gaby Montalvo had 3 goals and 5 steals. Sophomore Aria Torretta had 4 goals and 6 steals. Junior Emily Miller had 2 goals, 2 assists and 3 steals.

The champs are: Captain Kalei Ganser, Captain Alissa Pascual, Fernanda Cerqueira, Delilah Cohen, Allison Keepax, Emily Miller, Gaby Montalvo, Giorgia Pascual, Reese Rosenthal, Alissa Ruiz, Sofia Soler-Baillo, Sabrina Sharma, Antonia Trius and Aria Torretta.

The unbeaten Gulliver Prep boys’ team (20-0) also beat Cutler Bay 24-5 for its 15th district title.

The Raiders are six-time region champs, three-time state runners-up and fourtime state champs, including 2019.

Against Cutler Bay, Bruno Rebessi had 5 goals, 1 assist, 2 steals and drew 5 exclusions. JC Pompahad 5 goals, 1 assist and 5 steals. Awwal Kay Ramos had 1 goal, 3 assists and 7 steals. Kamal Kay Ramos had 5 blocks 1 goal, 1 assist and 1 steal.

The champs are: Toby Schoenwald, Parker Rosenthal, Sebastian Antorcha, Daniel Preston, Daniel Bellatin, Harry Sharma, Lukas Schoenwald, Captain JC Pompa, Captain Hayaat Kay-Ramos, goalie Kamal KayRamos, Jeronimo Dacharry, Awwal Kay-Ramos,

Leo Isom, Bruno Rebessi, Victor Gordon, Gabe Lewis-Keister, Bailey Quintero, Nick Aday, Krishan Nanda, and Ale Antorcha.

This season the girls’ and boys’ teams also won the Gulliver Invitation­al.

The girls defeated Mater Lakes, Miami Beach, Cutler Bay, St. Thomas Aquinas and South Broward.

The boys beat Belen, Mater Lakes, ATM, Columbus, St. Thomas Aquinas and South Broward.

Prior, the boys’ team won the Forza Stefano Water Polo Tournament at Pines Charter School in Pembroke Pines.

The Raiders beat Boca Raton in the semifinals and Belen in the finals.

Gulliver Prep water polo is under the direction of 12th-year coach Carroll Vaughan. The assistant coaches are Alex Guerra, Chelsea Johnson, Alex Martinez, Hunter Pellitier.

Next is regionals against Ransom Everglades on Tuesday.

RANSOM EVERGLADES WATER POLO

The Ransom Everglades girls’ and boys’ water polo teams won District 15 titles.

The boys (9-1) beat Columbus 21-10 in the finals and Coral Gables 28-2 in the semifinals.

BASKETBALL

Terrence McGriff of Bartow High School was named the 2021 Florida Dairy Farmers Boys’ Basketball Coach of the Year, following a final round of voting by a statewide panel of high school basketball coaches and media representa­tives.

McGriff, also the Class 6A Coach of the Year who led Bartow to a 22-4 record and a second consecutiv­e Class 6A state championsh­ip, is the second coach to win the state coaching honor twice, joining Blanche Ely’s Melvin Randall (2013 and 2015), and the first coach to win the award in backto-back years.

Class 4A Coach of the Year Ike Smith of Pine Crest finished fourth (52, one first place vote) in the final voting, followed by

Class 1A COY Marcus Hawkins of Wildwood (39), Class 5A COY Dave Roca of Pembroke Pines Charter (32), and Class 3A COY Cilk McSweeney of Calvary Christian (25).
