STREET PLAN
I’ve lived in Miami almost continuously for nearly 60 years. I’ve seen city planning, good and bad, come and go. One of the most successful was the conversion of Lincoln
Road in Miami Beach to a pedestrian mall. Vehicles are only allowed on the cross streets.
The upcoming Flagler Street renovation in Miami had the chance to do the same. Instead, planners chose to eliminate parking only; vehicles can still be driven along that road. This is a huge lost opportunity.
Lincoln Road merchants were against the ban too, in the beginning, fearing lost customers. Now they have one of the nation’s premier shopping and dining locales.
Flagler Street’s merchants and city leaders are going to be disappointed. It could have been so much better.
