A man walked outside a home in Fort Lauderdale early Friday morning and was shot to death, police say.

According to Fort Lauthree derdale Police Detective Ali Adamson, 34-year-old Brett Shell was shot while leaving his friend’s house around 4:50 a.m. Friday at 630 NW 10th Terrace.

As Shell walked to his car in the parking lot, someone shot him, police said. Shell, a father of

who lived in Pompano Beach, died in the parking lot, Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue said.

No one else was hurt and detectives are trying to figure out a motive, Adamson said.

Police don’t have a suspect yet, but Adamson said

“detectives do not currently believe there is a threat to public safety.”

Shell’s father, Ron Shell, told reporters his son might have been targeted because he “was known to carry large amounts of cash and may have been at the home for a gambling operation,” he told WTVJ-NBC 6.

Neighbors said they heard gunfire and told

CBS4 they had seen Brett Shell in the area “often.”

Fort Lauderdale police say if anyone saw the shooting or has any information on a suspect or suspects, they can call Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-8477. They can also call Detective Sergeant Steve Novak at 954-8285556, or Det. Mike Benson at 954-828-6561.
