N. Broward Prep edges Heritage in region semifinal

In a battle of district champs, North Broward Prep’s baseball team edged American Heritage 9-8 in a 4A Region semifinal.

Gian De Castro drove in Yoel Tejeda Jr. with the Eagles’ ninth run in the top of the sixth, which proved to be the winner.

North Broward Prep (1810-1) went ahead 5-0 in the top of the third and

8-3 after four innings.

American Heritage scored twice in the fifth, but North Broward Prep added one in the top of the sixth for a 9-5 advantage. The Patriots (17-6) rallied with three runs in the bottom of the sixth, but it was not enough.

Gian De Castro went 3 for 4 with two doubles and four RBI. Clancy Marsh was 3 for 5 with two runs, and Jonah Diaz was 2 for 4 with two runs and an RBI. Tyler Richman added a hit, a run and two RBI, and Kobe Benson doubled, walked and scored twice. Josh Steidl had a walk, a run and an RBI, and Yoel Tejeda Jr. walked and scored.

Pitchers Tejeda Jr. (3.1 IP, 3 R, 3 ER, 4H, 2 BB, 2 K) and Shane Huntsberge­r (3.2 IP, 5 R, 2 ER, 5 H, 1 BB, 3 K) combined for the win.

For American Heritage, Juhlien Gonzalez went 3 for 3 with a home run, two runs and two RBI. Justin Quintana doubled and drove in two runs, and Mateo Serna tripled and drove in two runs.

North Broward Prep plays Mater Lakes Academy (22-7) on Wednesday in a region final. In another battle of district champs, the visiting Bears beat Miami Springs 7-5 in a region semifinal.

5A Region semifinal: Archbishop McCarthy 6, Belen Jesuit 5:

The visiting Mavericks (19-8-2) went ahead 5-0, but Belen Jesuit (19-10) rallied with four runs in the fourth.

Archbishop McCarthy scored once in the fifth, and the Wolverines answered with one in the bottom of the seventh but fell short.

Antonio Jimenez was 3 for 5 with two runs, and Adrian Vega went 2 for 4 with a run and two RBI. Jake Cue was 2 for 3 with a run and an RBI. Jake Alfaro was 2 for 3 with a run and two RBI. Noah Chance and Zaid Diaz added two hits apiece.

Starter Andrew Ildefonso pitched six innings, allowing four runs, one earned, on five hits and four walks while striking out nine. Nico GutierrezV­illa pitched 1/3 of an inning, and Diaz tossed 2/3 of an inning, striking out two.

For Belen Jesuit, Dorian Gonzalez was 2 for 3 with a double, a run and an RBI. Jack Sampedro doubled, walked twice and scored.

Archbishop McCarthy plays (Melbourne) Eau

Galle (21-5) on Wednesday in a region final.

6A Region final:

West Palm Beach

Dwyer 2, Doral Academy 0: The season for the Firebirds (24-5-1) came to an end in a tough road game. Dwyer scored once in the second and once in the third. Doral had just two hits, both by Renzo Gonzalez.

Dwyer (18-9) beat Cooper City 4-0 in the region quarterfin­al and St. Thomas Aquinas 5-2 in the region semifinal.

6A Region semifinal:

● Doral Academy 7, Goleman 1: Leading 1-0, the Firebirds scored four times in the third and never looked back.

Goleman ended its season at 14-11-1.

2A Region final:

Lake Worth Trinity Christian 12, Miami Christian 7: In a battle of district runner-ups, the visiting Warriors (17-7-2) advanced to the state semifinal.

Trinity Christian built an 8-0 lead and never looked back.

Andrew Estrella went 3 for 3 with two home runs, two walks, three runs and four RBI for the Victors (9-16). Ayden Cham was 2 for 4 with two doubles and an RBI. Jose Torres doubled and walked twice.

2A Region semifinal:

Miami Christian 1, Champagnat 0 (10 innings): The Victors avenged a district final loss.

Bryant Zayas scored the winner on an RBI hit by Brandon Paez.

Starting pitcher Maximo Villamizar tossed six shutout innings, allowing five hits and one walk. Winning pitcher Chris Diaz added four more shutout innings, giving up no hits and one walk while striking out six.

Champagnat finished 19-7.
