Swiss oust France, advance in Euro

-

Au revoir, France — this summer belongs to Yann Sommer.

The Switzerland goalkeeper, who left in the middle of the European Championship’s group stage to be with his wife for the birth of their second daughter, made the biggest save of his life against one of the best players in the world — diving to his right to save the final penalty by Kylian Mbappé

That gave the Swiss a 5-4 penalty shootout victory over World Cup champion France on Monday and a spot in the quarterfinals of a major soccer tournament for the first time in 67 years. The match had finished 3-3.

Spain reached the quarters when Alvaro Morata

and Mikel Oyarzabal

scored in extra time for a 5-3 win over Croatia.

Spain gifted Croatia a bizarre own-goal in the first half and then threw away a 3-1 lead but Morata made it 4-3 when he controlled a cross in the 100th minute and sent a shot past goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic.

College baseball: University of Miami closer

Carson Palmquist was named an All-American by D1 Baseball. Palmquist was named to the D1 Baseball All-America Second Team after a standout season anchoring Miami’s bullpen. The left-hander has also been named a first-team All-American by the NCBWA and Perfect Game, while he earned second-team honors from Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball and a third-team selection by the ABCA.

College basketball: The Hurricanes’ men’s basketball team will travel to Penn State for the 2021 Big Ten/ACC Challenge. Miami is slated to meet the Nittany Lions Dec. 1. The Hurricanes are 0-4 all-time versus Penn State, but the two have not faced one another in more than 25 years.

Tour de France: Tim Merlier of Belgium powered to victory in the third stage when several top contenders hit the ground during another crashmarred day. Merlier won ahead of his Alpecin-Fenix teammate Jasper Philipsen and Frenchman

Nacer Bouhanni. There was a crash in the closing stages when sprinter Caleb Ewan’s front wheel slid from under him in the final turn. He brought down Peter Sagan with him. Ewan broke his right collarbone. Mathieu van der Poel rode safely at the front throughout the day and escaped unscathed to keep the yellow jersey he earned on Sunday.
