Seattle Mariners pitcher

Héctor Santiago became the first player disciplined under Major League Baseball's crackdown on gripenhancing foreign substances, given a 10-game suspension Tuesday.

Michael Hill, the former Marlins general manager who is senior vice president for on-field operations, announced the penalty two days after Santiago was ejected from a game at the Chicago White Sox. Santiago also was fined an undisclosed amount.

He appealed the decision and the suspension will be delayed until the appeal is decided.

Under a crackdown that started June 21, all pitchers are being checked by umpires during games. Crew chief Tom Hallion said then that Santiago was ejected for “having a foreign substance that was sticky on the inside palm of his glove.”

Meanwhile, Giants pitcher Gregory Santos was suspended for 80 games without pay under MLB’s drug program following a positive test for Stanozolol.

OHTANI’S BLAST

Shohei Ohtani made his first career hit at Yankee Stadium monumental.

The two-way superstar’s no-doubt firstinning home run Monday off Michael King that left the bat at 117.2 mph.

Not only the hardesthit homer of the season, it was the hardest wallop by an Angels player since Statcast began tracking in 2015, topping Ohtani’s own record of 117 mph from earlier this season.

“That definitely sent a message,” Angels manager Joe Maddon said after Los Angeles’ 5-3 win sent the Yankees to their fourth consecutive loss.

The homer was Ohtani’s 26th, tying Toronto’s

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. for the major-league lead, one ahead of San Diego’s

Fernando Tatis Jr.

SCHWARBER’S HR BINGE

Kyle Schwarber homered twice Monday, becoming the first player in major-league history to hit 15 home runs in a 17-day span, in the Nationals’ 8-4 win over the Mets.

Schwarber socked a 1-0 fastball from Jared Eickhoff an estimated 439 feet into the upper deck in right field in the first inning. Schwarber took Eickhoff (0-1) deep again in the fifth inning, his 24th.

The Nationals have won 12 of 15 and moved within three games of the first-place Mets in the NL East.
