Big-hearted TV shows for ‘Ted Lasso’ fans

- BY RANDY MCMULLEN AND CHUCK BARNEY

If you’re a fan of somewhat kinder, gentler comedies like “Ted Lasso,” here are some other shows to try.

“We Are Lady Parts”: This oft-overlooked comedy follows a group of London Muslim women who form a punk band. They bicker and have all kinds of life and faith issues, but their devotion to each other adds a touching foundation to the punchlines. (Peacock)

“Atypical”: This tender-hearted comedy follows a 19-yearold man on the autism spectrum as he searches for love and independence. It promotes messages about inclusion and empathy. (Netflix)

“Superstore”: Like “Ted Lasso,” this comedy is anchored by a known star (America Ferrera), but it’s the deep roster of secondary characters and their relationships that add comedic depth and poignance. In this case, the action takes place in a big-box store in the Midwest. (Hulu)

“Detroiters”: The underrated comedy about two goodhearted, but overmatched Michigan buddies trying to make it in the world of advertising was executive-produced by Jason Sudeikis and “Saturday Night Live” creator Lorne Michaels, but dropped by Comedy Central after two seasons. (Paramount+)

“Schitt’s Creek”: Most people are already familiar with this Emmy Award winner about a family plunged into financial ruin and forced to adapt to a new world and its quirky inhabitants. What holds it all together is that the family members are nearly as fond of each other as the writers were of the odd, lovable characters they created. (Netflix)
