STILL A HOPE
Hardly a day goes by that the Miami Herald doesn’t publish an article about the impact of climate change, and rightly so: Climate disasters are not events in the mistyeyed future. They are all around us.
In the Sept. 14 story, “Report: Climate change could force 200 million people to move by 2050,” the Herald reported on the forced migration of millions because their homelands will become uninhabitable. As sobering stories of disrupted landscapes and lives engulf us, let us also discuss and implement solutions.
Technology already exists to alter our current, frightening trajectory. Putting a price on carbon emissions is a marketbased solution that can stimulate investment in energy alternatives as it reduces our carbon footprint. Returning fees to citizens in the form of a dividend helps our economy and creates jobs.
I applaud the federal Senate Finance Committee for considering this model for building a sustainable world for future generations. The time to act is now.
