Panarin’s goal powers Rangers to OT win
Artemi Panarin scored with 1:12 left in overtime to lift the New York Rangers to a 2-1 win against the Toronto Maple Leafs at Scotiabank Arena on Monday.
Panarin beat Jack Campbell glove-side from the right circle after winning a battle for the puck off the face-off.
Igor Shesterkin made 40 saves, and Mika Zibanejad had a goal and an assist for the Rangers (2-1-1).
Michael Bunting scored and Campbell made 21 saves for the Maple Leafs (2-1-1).
Zibanejad gave New York a 1-0 lead at 13:49 of the first period, intercepting a clearing attempt by John Tavares and beating Campbell from the high slot.
Bunting tied it 1-1 at 1:36 of the second period when his redirection of Morgan Rielly’s pass trickled over the goal line.
Toronto outshot New York 17-2 in the second period.
Flyers 6, Kraken 1: Claude Giroux and Travis Konecny scored, Carter Hart stopped 24 shots and the Flyers spoiled former coach Dave Hakstol’s return to Philadelphia with a 6-1 win over the Seattle Kraken on Monday night.
Joel Farabee, Derick Brassard, Ryan Ellis and Justin Braun also scored for the Flyers.
Carson Soucy scored the first goal in four games for a Kraken defenseman in team history. The previous three were each decided by one goal.
Hakstol was hired by the Flyers in 2015 right out of a college job at North Dakota and fired in December 2018 after he went 134-101-42, coaching the third-most games in franchise history behind Fred Shero and Mike Keenan – and the most for the Flyers without winning a playoff series.
He couldn’t win in his return with Seattle, either.
The Flyers scored three times in the first period and treated the Kraken like a run-of-the-mill expansion franchise, not as an instant contender, such as the Vegas Golden Knights.

Sharks: The NHL has suspended San Jose Sharks forward Evander Kane for 21 games for submitting a fake COVID-19 vaccination card.
The league on Monday announced the suspension without pay and said Kane will not be eligible to play until Nov. 30 at New Jersey. Kane will forfeit about $1.68 million of his $7 million salary for this season with the money going to the Players’
Emergency Assistance Fund.
The league also announced that a concurrent investigation into allegations of sexual and physical abuse made against Kane by his estranged wife, Anna, could not be substantiated.
“I would like to apologize to my teammates, the San Jose Sharks organization, and all Sharks fans for violating the NHL COVID protocols,” Kane said in a statement. “I made a mistake, one I sincerely regret and take responsibility for. During my suspension, I will continue to participate in counseling to help me make better decisions in the future. When my suspension is over, I plan to return to the ice with great effort, determination, and love for the game of hockey.”
The Sharks have not said what Kane’s status will be after the investigations. Kane had not been around the team since the start of training camp while these investigations were ongoing in an agreement between him and the team.
“While we are encouraged by Evander’s commitment to moving forward, we are extremely disappointed by his disregard for the health and safety protocols put in place by the NHL and the NHLPA,” the team said in a statement.
