Brouse sisters help Cypress Bay capture flag football district title

The Brouse sisters helped lead the undefeated Cypress Bay flag football team over Cooper

City 12-6 for the District 14-2A championship at McArthur High School.

Tied at six after one quarter, the Lightning (13-0) scored the winner in the fourth quarter on Mia Batista’s 9-yard TD run.

QB Maddy Brouse was 9-of-14 passing for 118 yards and a touchdown. Batista carried the ball eight times for 45 yards and a score.

Maddy Brouse also ran the ball 10 times for 61 yards. Peyton Looky added three rushes for 26 yards, and Kelly Brouse carried the ball twice for 14 yards.

Looky caught the touchdown pass from Maddy Brouse, covering 25 yards to open the scoring on the first drive of the game. Cooper City (13-4) answered with a touchdown on the ensuing possession to even things.

Campbell Halsey made five receptions for 36 yards, and Kelly Brouse caught a pass covering 38 yards. Nicole Tello hauled in a 13-yard pass and M.Batista a 6-yarder.

Kelly Brouse added to her all-around totals by making three flag pulls and intercepting a pass. Halsey led in flag pulls with four. Erin Greenbaum, Myla Marshall and Cordelia Schlonsky each made three flag pulls. Marshall also recorded a sack.

This marks Cypress Bay’s second district title in girls’ flag football with the first in the 2009-10 school year.

District 14-2A championship: Cypress Bay 12, Cooper City 6: Prior, Cypress Bay beat South Broward and McArthur, and Cooper City beat Boyd Anderson and Everglades.

Ever since the start of girls’ flag football at Edison, the Red Raiders (11-1) have won a district title, including this season, giving them six.

District 15-1A championship: Edison 26, Central 0: Prior, Edison beat SLAM, and Central beat Northwestern and HEA.

District 16-1A championship: Somerset Academy-Silver Palms 8, Killian 6: QB Jaida Bayron 19-of-28, 145 yds, 8 carries, 65 yds; Dianka Hardisson 6 receptions, 40 yds; Shanaii Gamble 5 receptions, 61 yds; Amber Mateo 3 receptions, 21 yds; Prior, Somerset beat Keys Gate and South Miami. Killian beat True North and upset TERRA, after losing to the Cougars in the regular season. The Stallions improved to 13-1.

District 14-1A championship: Norland 7, Carol City 0: Prior, Norland, the second seed, beat third seed Mater

Lakes Academy, and Carol City, the fourth seed, beat top seed Chaminade-Madonna. The Vikings improved to 8-3.

District 13-1A championship: Pembroke Pines Charter 18, Pompano Beach 7: POMP: QB Hailey Mull 12-26, 140 yds, TD; Samantha Escobar 1 reception, 60 yds, TD, 4 flag pulls; Ella Casey 5 receptions, 45 yds, 3 flag pulls; Jackie Etienne 3 flag fulls; Judaiah Elam 1 Int; Reagan VanBuskirk 3 Int. Prior, third seed PPC beat Somerset Academy-Pembroke Pines and second seed Hollywood Hills. Fourth seed Pompano beat Stranahan and Archbishop McCarthy. The Jaguars improved to 9-5.

District 16-2A championship: Ferguson 7, Southridge 0: SR: QB Quentasia Mills 7-of-15 passing, 33 yds, 3 carries, 15 yds; Mya Pedraza 7 catches, 26 yds. Prior, Ferguson beat Coral Reef and Coral Park. Southridge upset Homestead, after losing to the Broncos in the regular season, and beat Southwest. The Falcons improved to 12-2.

District 15-2A championship: Miami High 38, American 0: After a scoreless first quarter, the Stingarees erupted, scoring 19 in the second quarter and 13 in the third. Prior Miami High beat Hialeah Gardens and Miami Beach, and American beat Goleman and Hialeah. The Stingarees improved to 13-1.

District 13-2A championship: Western 41, Dillard 8: QB/Rec Sydney

Ford 21-of-32 passing, 186 yds, 1 catch, 10 yds, 1 rush, 4 yds; QB/Rec Tamara Elliott 2-of-2, 30 yds, 2 catches, 10 yds; Nandi Ramessar 9 catches, 117 yds, 3 TD; Sydney Brennan 7 catches, 48 yds, TD; Lauren Holschauer 2 catches, 10 yds, TD; Lian Scott 4 tackles; Naiya Rampat 2 sacks; Sydney Ford 3 tackles, INT, TD; Nandi Ramessar INT; Victoria McBride INT. Prior, Western beat Piper and Taravella, and Dillard beat St. Thomas Aquinas and Nova. The Wildcats improved to 14-0.

LACROSSE

The St. Thomas Aquinas boys’ lacrosse team defeated Jupiter 13-9 for a 2A region title.

Tied at two, the Raiders outscored Jupiter 5-3 in the second quarter. Leading

7-5, St. Thomas Aquinas built a six-goal lead by the end of the third.

The Raiders (15-3) advance to the state semifinal on Thursday at the Paradise Coast Sports Complex in Naples.

The St. Thomas Aquinas girls’ lacrosse team also won a 2A region title, beating Boca Raton 23-5.

The Raiders (14-3) play Vero Beach in a state semifinal on Friday at the Paradise Coast Sports Complex in Naples.

The Delray BeachAmerican Heritage girls’ lacrosse team defeated Pine Crest 21-5 for a 1A region title. The Panthers ended the season 18-4.

SOFTBALL

Winning pitcher Emme Fundora threw a perfect game as the Palmer Trinity softball team shut out Marathon in a district semifinal.

BASEBALL

The Riviera Prep baseball team won its first playoff game in school history.

WRESTLING

Sawyer Bartelt of South Dade was named Florida Class 3A Wrestler of the Year by the Florida Dairy Farmers selection committee.

A sophomore, Bartelt (220 pounds) won his second consecutive state title in 2022, and he has still yet to lose a high school match. He helped the Buccaneers win another state team title.

Bartelt, one of three finalists for Mr. Wrestling honors, also earned Miami Herald All-Dade Wrestler of the Year honors.

GOLF

Local golfers Luke Clanton and Nicholas Prieto, two top junior players, tied for third at the 2022 Terra Cotta Invitational at the

Naples National Golf

Club.

The annual event features a combination of top junior tournament players, mid-amateurs and college players.

Clanton, a senior at Plantation-American Heritage, is a four-time Miami Herald All-Broward Golfer of the Year. Prieto, a junior at Florida Christian School, is the 2021 Miami Herald All-Dade Golfer of the Year.

Clanton (71-71-68) and Prieto (68-67-75) shot 210, one shot behind second and eight shots back of the champ. Clanton will play golf next season at Florida State University.
