A Florida deputy who risked life and limb to save a toddler from a burning building got some welldeserved props last week.

In a news release on Facebook, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office commended Deputy William Puzynski for climbing to a thirdfloor balcony at an Orlando apartment complex on April 23 to rescue a 2-year-old girl.

A video attached to the Facebook post shows Puzynski arriving at the fire, then knocking on doors, yelling at residents to get out.

“There were screams from everywhere,” the deputy said. “I could a hear a baby screaming. That’s what caught my attention most, her screams.”

The child’s mother, Barbara Elenus, was on the balcony, holding the little girl in diapers.

“I didn’t know what else to do,” said Elenus, who reunited with members of the law enforcement agency last Tuesday to thank her rescuers personally.

In dramatic bodycam video on the FB post, you can see Puzynski scale the burning building and try to steady himself on the railing of a terrace. He’s heard shouting, “We’re coming! Hand me your baby!”

“I was able to grab her around the waist and bring her in,” the deputy humbly explained during a press conference Tuesday. “Then I handed her down to my partners down below.”

Puzynski’s colleagues were impressed by Puzynski’s agility — and bravery.

“I hope he thinks he’s a hero,” said fellow deputy Digiovanni Lugo. “They should put him in the new Marvel movie or something. SpiderMan, Part II.”

“That deputy is my hero; he’s changed my outlook on law enforcement,” said Elenus. “I’m just happy to be alive and I’m here to share my story.”

Fire crews rescued all the other residents, many who evacuated safely. No one was injured.
