Florida COVID report: Two weeks of county cases and deaths reported after a glitch

What does the COVID-19 situation look like in Florida this week?

In the past seven days, the state has added 8,627 cases and 20 deaths per day, on average, according to Miami Herald calculatio­ns of data published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Over the past three weeks, on average, 273 more cases were logged each day in Florida, showing an increase in trends.

The number of cases is likely an undercount due to positive results from at-home COVID testing. The state also only tracks resident cases and deaths, excluding non-residents.

NUMBER OF CASES

In the period of May 6-19, Florida saw 99,630 new cases, according to Miami Herald calculatio­ns of the CDC’s Community Profile Report published Tuesday.

New cases included two weeks’ worth of changes due to a reporting error that caused the CDC not to report data last week.

Miami-Dade reported 26,208 new resident cases in the two-week span. The county’s resident case total is 1,242,434. From May 11-17, 95,244 tests were administer­ed, the CDC reported. This may be an undercount due to delayed reporting, the agency said. Testing increased by 13% from the previous week.

Broward reported 12,930 new resident cases. The county’s resident case total is 630,368. From

May 11-17, 41,838 tests were administer­ed, the CDC reported. Testing increased by 12% from the previous week.

Palm Beach reported 7,761 new resident cases. The county’s resident case total stands at 385,618. From May 11-17, 23,653 tests were administer­ed, the CDC reported. Testing increased by 11% from the previous week.

Monroe reported 293 new resident cases. The county’s resident case total is 19,113. From May 11-17, 914 tests were administer­ed, the CDC reported. Testing increased by 11% from the previous week.

NUMBER OF DEATHS

Florida has added 270 deaths in the past two weeks, according to Miami Herald calculatio­ns of the CDC’s Tuesday Community Profile Report.

As of Tuesday’s Community Profile Report, Florida had a rate of 346 cumulative deaths per 100,000 people since the start of the pandemic.

Miami-Dade’s death toll is 10,957, an increase of 36 deaths in the last two weeks report. That’s a rate of 403 cumulative deaths per 100,000 people since the beginning of the pandemic.

Broward’s death toll is 5,873, an increase of 21. That’s a rate of 301 cumulative deaths per 100,000 people.

Palm Beach’s death toll is 5,073, an increase of 14. That’s a rate of 339 cumulative deaths per 100,000 people.

Monroe’s death toll is 119; no new deaths were reported. The county would be at a death rate of 160 deaths per 100,000 people if its population were that large.

FLORIDA COVID-19 HOSPITALIZ­ATIONS

The number of people hospitaliz­ed with COVID has continued to increase. There were 2,157 people hospitaliz­ed in Florida, with 195 in the ICU, according to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services report on Tuesday.

Over the past three weeks, on average, 42 more people were hospitaliz­ed each day in Florida, showing an increase in hospital trends. ICU patients are also trending upward with 5 more people in the unit each day, on average, over the past three weeks.

At delta’s August peak, more than 15,000 patients were hospitaliz­ed in Florida, according to HHS data.
