Gilbert earns 10th win to elevate surging Mariners

-

Logan Gilbert earned his 10th win to tie for the major-league lead, Sam Haggerty hit his first home run in more than two months and the Seattle Mariners beat the Padres 6-2 on Tuesday at

San Diego.

The Mariners, who have won 12 of their past 15 games, swept the twogame set to win their fifth consecutive series. Seattle (41-42) moved within one game of .500 for the first time since May 4.

Haggerty had three hits, Dylan Moore doubled twice and hot-hitting rookie Julio Rodríguez had two singles for Seattle.

Haggerty and Rodriguez also both stole a base — Moore, meanwhile, was twice caught stealing.

The Padres have lost nine of 12.

Gilbert (10-3) allowed one earned run and six hits in 5 innings. He walked three, struck out one and has a 2.61 ERA.

Gibert matched Houston's Justin Verlander and the Dodgers' Tony Gonsolin atop the big league win chart.

Mike Clevinger (2-1) gave up four runs and six hits over six innings. With the Padres’ offensive struggles, that was enough for the Mariners — San Diego has scored 10 runs in six games, with four coming in the ninth inning on Sunday.

Clevinger retired the initial eight batters before Haggerty’s first home run since April 24 gave Seattle a 1-0 lead in the third.

LATE MONDAY Mets 7, Reds 4:

Brandon Nimmo and Francisco Lindor homered to lead New York at Cincinnati.

Taijuan Walker (7-2) struck out nine in six innings as the Mets won their second straight after losing four of five. The NL East leaders improved to 50-30.

Braves 6, Cardinals 3:

Dansby Swanson hit a three-run double in a five-run second inning and host Atlanta held off St. Louis in a game delayed more than 2 1⁄2 hours by rain.

The Cardinals loaded the bases for a couple of big hitters in the ninth, but Will Smith struck out Nolan Arenado and retired Albert Pujols on a grounder back to the mound for his fifth save.

Matt Olson had two RBI singles for the Braves, driving in Swanson both times.

Mariners 8, Padres 2: Prized rookie Julio Rodriguez hit a monster tworun homer, Cal Raleigh drove in four runs and Chris Flexen pitched Seattle to the win at San Diego.

The Mariners won their third straight and sixth in seven games. The Padres lost for the eighth time in 11 games.

ELSEWHERE Tigers:

Jonathan Schoop had six hits in Detroit’s doubleheader sweep of the Guardians on Monday. Schoop, who entered the day hitting .191, had four singles in four at-bats and scored two runs in a 4-1 Tigers win in the opener. He made it six straight with a leadoff double in the third inning of the second game, scored a run and added an RBI single in the fourth.

“He’s had some really good at-bats and I mention his defense again because he made some plays that helped us win on that side, too,” Tiger manager AJ Hinch said.

Mets: New York ace Max Scherzer was back on a major-league mound for the first time since May 18 on Tuesday at Cincinnati. The right-hander, who turns 38 in three weeks, hadn’t pitched for the

Mets since he strained the oblique muscle in his left side while throwing a pitch to the Cardinals’ Albert Pujols.

Scherzer is 5-1 with a 2.54 ERA in his first season with the Mets, who signed the three-time Cy Young Award winner to a $130 million, three-year contract during the offseason.

He made a pair of starts for Double-A Binghamton on June 21 and 29, allowing four earned runs and seven hits in eight innings with 14 strikeouts and two walks.

Phillies: Bryce Harper returned to the team’s clubhouse Tuesday and vowed to return to the lineup this season. The reigning National League MVP declined to publicly put a timetable on his recovery from a fractured left thumb, although a source familiar with Harper’s thinking said he’s aiming to be back before Sept. 1, possibly by the middle of August.
