Miami Rowing Club wins gold in U17 regatta

The Miami Rowing Club team made history by winning the gold medal in the U17 category of the men’s coxed 4 boat during the prestigiou­s Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston.

In its 55-year history, this is the largest two-day regatta in the world with 2,488 entries and 792 clubs racing.

MRC rowers participat­ed among 11,000 domestic and internatio­nal rowers.

On the record-setting coxed 4 boat were rowers representi­ng various Miami schools:

George Pesin (3 seat from Coral Reef), Michael Kourakos (2 seat from Palmer Trinity), Natalia Narvaez (coxswain from Carrollton), Andres Hernandez-Ibañez (stroke from LaSalle) and Mateo Montero Johnson (bow from MAST).

This is the first time a Miami crew won a gold medal in this category, the youngest in the regatta.

The Belen Jesuit crew team made its own history.

The Belen Jesuit under-17 8+ boat won a gold medal, the first in the program's history at the Head of the Charles event.

The record setters are: (Cox) Lorenzo “Enzo” Cruz-Cruz, Marcus Mantecon, Andrew Schmidt, Arturo Castelo, Mariano Mateo Martinez, Nicolas Battistini, Luis Jorge Lopez, Peter Schmidt and Marco Alberni.

SAILING

Ransom Everglades Varsity Sailing (A and B teams) placed second at the Atlantic Coast Championsh­ip, a national regatta

in Annapolis, Maryland.

The event featured 18 top high school sailing programs from Massachuse­tts, New York, Michigan, Minnesota, Maryland, Virginia and the Southeaste­rn United States.

Raiders skippers Jackson McAliley (’23) and Ian Fox (’24) led the A and B teams, respective­ly. Manolo Campos (’23) and McAliley were fourth in the A Division. Christine Keedy Brown (’24), Violet Martin (’24) and Fox were third in the B Division.

After two days of competitio­n, Ransom Everglades was the top finisher from the Southeast. Joe Logan is the coach.

GOLF

The American Junior Golf Associatio­n announced its 2022 Rolex Junior All-America Teams.

Nicholas Prieto of Miami was an honorable mention selection. A Florida Christian senior, he recently finished tied for second in the FHSAA Class 1A State Golf Championsh­ips.

He has committed to Arizona State.

The Rolex Junior AllAmerica Teams annually recognize the world’s premier junior golfers.

The 2022 class includes 48 boys and 48 girls, ages 14-19, from 24 states and 10 countries, including Canada, China, Czech Republic, Hong Kong, Mexico, Philippine­s, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and the United States.

The golfers distinguis­hed themselves through exceptiona­l play in 145 national junior golf events, 128 of which were conducted by the AJGA. The teams were determined exclusivel­y through the Rolex AJGA Rankings as of Oct. 12.
