Scott, Maryland beat UM in Tip-Off championsh­ip game

Donta Scott scored 24 points, all five Maryland starters reached double figures in scoring, and the Terrapins defeated Miami 88-70 on Sunday in the championsh­ip game of the Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-Off at Uncasville, Connecticu­t.

Maryland remains undefeated in Kevin Willard’s first season as coach, largely due to an explosive first half in which Scott had 17 points, six rebounds and three assists and the Terrapins drained seven threepoint­ers to lead 47-34 at the break. The Terps shot 63% and dominated the boards with a 24-8 rebounding advantage.

Maryland (5-0) extended its lead to 18 points early in the second half and still led by 18 with about 10 minutes to go. Jordan Miller scored five straight points and Isaiah Wong hit a couple of jumpers as Miami (4-1) closed to within 73-63 with 6:30 remaining. A minute later, a 3-point play by Jahmir Young got Maryland restarted and the Terrapins soon led by 18 again.

Wong led Miami with 22 points, Jordan Miller scored 18, and Norchad Omier added 14.

Miami’s first loss of the season comes one game after coach Jim Larrañaga won his 700th game.

Senior All-American center Trayce Jackson-Davis scored nine of a game-high 17 points for the Hoosiers (4-0), who closed the first half on a 22-6 run and cruised to a victory over the Redhawks (1-3) in the Hoosier Classic at Indianapol­is.

No. 16 Virginia 70, No. 19 Illinois 61: Reece Beekman and the Cavaliers capped an emotional week by going on a late 13-point run to defeat the Illini and

win the Continenta­l Tire Main Event at Las Vegas. The Cavaliers (4-0) trailed 58-56 with 3 minutes left when they broke away from Illinois (4-1). The game was played exactly a week after Virginia football players Lavel Davis Jr., Devin Chandler and D’Sean Perry were fatally shot after a field trip to see a play in Washington. Former Virginia football player Christophe­r Darnell Jones Jr. faces three counts

of second-degree murder and other charges.

No. 24 Texas A&M 67, Loyola Chicago 49: Backup Henry Coleman III scored 13 points and Julius Marble scored 11 points in the Aggies’ (3-2) win at Conway, South Carolina in the Myrtle Beach Invitation­al.

No. 25 UConn 95, Delaware State 60:

Adama Sanogo scored 26 points to lead the host Huskies (5-0) over the Hornets (1-4).

WOMEN DePaul 98, UM 83:

Freshman Lazaria Spearman recorded her third straight double-digit outing with a team-leading 19 points on a perfect 7-for-7 effort from the floor, and Chicago native Destiny Harden totaling 18 points to go along with six rebounds and two steals, as the .Hurricanes (4-1) shot a season-best 48 percent but could not contain the host Blue Demons’ (2-2) offense.

“That was an incredibly special performanc­e by DePaul. They needed it and Doug [Bruno] and his staff do a fantastic job and they have two big-time basketball players who showed up for their team,” head coach Katie Meier said. “There was a lot of a lack of awareness on the defensive end and we need to get back to our identity. We need to be a lot smarter and commit more to the defensive end.

Sophomore Ja’Leah Williams and senior Haley Cavinder joined Harden and Spearman in doubledigi­ts with 14 and 11 points, respective­ly.

No. 1 South Carolina 76, No. 2 Stanford 71 (OT): Bree Hall hit a three-pointer with 42 seconds left in overtime, Aliyah Boston overcame early foul trouble to score 14, including the tying jumper with two seconds left in regulation, and the defending champion Gamecocks (4-0) rallied past the host Cardinal (5-1) in a dramatic early-season showdown.

No. 4 Iowa 73, Belmont 62: Caitlin Clark scored a season-high 33 points and the host Hawkeyes (4-1) pulled away late to defeat the Bruins (1-3).

No. 5 UConn 91, No. 10 N.C. State 69: Azzi

Fudd scored 32 points and the host Huskies (3-0) beat the Wolfpack (4-1).

No. 7 Iowa State 99, Columbia 76: Ashley Joens had 33 points and 10 rebounds, and the host Cyclones rolled past Columbia (3-2) to improve to 4-0.

No. 8 Ohio State 99, McNeese State 43: Taylor Thierry scored 15 points to lead five in double figures in the host Buckeyes’ (4-0) rout of McNeese (1-4).

No. 9 Notre Dame 95, Ball State 60: Dara Mabrey scored 19 points and Olivia Miles had 13 points, 11 assists and seven rebounds in the host Fighting Irish’s (4-0) win over the Cardinals (2-2).
