LIV Golf expands to 14 tournaments, adds 2023 events in Mexico, Singapore, Spain
The controversial LIV Golf series isn’t going away. In fact, it’s growing.
LIV Golf announced Wednesday that it is adding tournaments in Mexico, Singapore and Spain as part of a 14-event 2023 schedule.
Events are set at Mayakoba’s El Camaleon Golf Course (Feb. 24-26), Sentosa Golf Club in Singapore (April 28-30) and Real Club Valderrama in Spain (June 30-July 2).
LIV previously announced it would play at The Grange Golf Club in Australia (April 21-23).
It is also expected to return to The Centurion Club outside London, which was the site of its inaugural event in June.
“LIV Golf is truly a global league dedicated to expanding the sport throughout the world, and these destinations for the league’s 2023 launch showcase our commitment to tournament play at the highest level,” LIV Golf CEO and commissioner Greg Norman said in a statement. “These venues have played host to signature moments in golf, and we’re excited to build new traditions for the sport while delivering a first-class fan experience at some of the world’s best courses.”
Mayakoba has hosted a PGA Tour event since 2007; Russell Henley won the World Wide Technology Championship there on Nov. 6. Valderrama hosted the 1997 Ryder Cup and was the site of a DP World Tour event in recent years. The Grange Golf Club was the course where Norman won his first tournament as a pro in 1976.
LIV is expected to announce the rest of its
2023 schedule in the coming weeks.
According to various published reports, the circuit, which is being funded by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, will stage tournaments on three courses owned by former U.S. President Donald Trump: Trump National Golf Club Bedminster in New Jersey, Trump National Golf Club Washington D.C. in Virginia and Trump National
Doral in Miami, which was the site of the inaugural team championship in October.
LIV Golf reportedly will also events in Florida, Arizona, Oklahoma and West Virginia.
WEIR TO LEAD INTERNATIONAL TEAM
Mike Weir is the next Presidents Cup captain for the International team
Former Masters champion Mike Weir has been selected as International captain for the Presidents Cup at Royal Montreal in 2024 as the Canadian tries to beat a U.S. team that has lost only once since the matches began in 1994.
Weir becomes the first International captain to lead his team in his home country since Greg Norman in Australia in 2011.
The Presidents Cup returns to Royal Montreal, the oldest golf club in North America, for the second time. Weir was a player in 2007 and took down Tiger Woods ina singles match, though the Americans will won.
“Presidents Cup has become such a big part of my career, so to be here in this moment announced as captain of the 2024 International Team is surreal,” said Weir, referring to it as the “experience of a lifetime.”
Weir has eight PGA Tour victories, none bigger than his playoff win at Augusta National in 2003 to become the first Canadian man to win a major.
He played in his first Presidents Cup in 2000, beating Phil Mickelson in singles, and played on four more matches, including the tie in 2003 in South Africa. He has a 13-9-2 record in five appearances.
