Heritage CB Brown closes in on final decision

The visits — at least all the big, official ones — are done, and Damari Brown is ready to lock in with a college later this month.

First, the four-star cornerback is hoping to win another state championship, though.

Brown and Plantation American Heritage are just two victories from winning the Class 2M championship and, after getting a 31-20 win against rival Fort Lauderdale Cardinal Gibbons last Friday, they tried to get over one of those final hurdles late Friday when they hosted Jacksonville Bolles in Plantation.

It’s a busy time of the year for the senior, and Brown is doing his best to figure out his college choice while mainly focusing on the final days of his high school career.

“It’s not totally out of my brain,” Brown said last Friday. “I try to go week by week. I’m trying to see where my heart feels.”

With less than three weeks left until Brown signs a national letter of intent, the Miami Hurricanes and Alabama have both established some momentum during the 6-1, 180-pound corner’s recruitment.

Florida State is also hanging around in the mix after hosting Brown for an official visit in October.

Miami hosted Brown for an official visit last month, and it will be the last one he takes during this process, he said.

Alabama hosted him for its win against Auburn last Saturday, and it could be his last visit of any kind during this process, he added

If American Heritage reaches the 2M championship, Brown will only have one free weekend between now and the start of the early signing period Dec. 21, with next weekend set to be a bye before most state title games. There’s not a lot of time for him to add more information to his decision-making process, as he plans to sign early.

There’s still a lot to like about the Hurricanes’ standing in this recruitment. The only prediction in the 247Sports Crystal Ball pegs Brown to stay in South Florida, and he’s a Miami legacy as the son of former defensive back Selwyn Brown.

He also plays a major position of need for the Hurricanes and could contribute early as the No. 25 cornerback in the Class of 2023, according to the 247 composite rankings.

His official visit, he said, was informative and a different vibe than all the numerous unofficial visits he took to Coral Gables throughout the 2023 recruiting cycle.

“It was good vibes, good to get away from just the campus, spend some time in Key Biscayne, relax, unwind,” he said. “It was a lot of good things . ... The fans came out. I got a lot of good knowledge about after school what they’ll do for me there. I got a feel of academics-wise how they’ll set you up for life, just how I fit in the defense, kind of going over stuff like that.”

Even after failing to qualify for a bowl game, Miami once again has some momentum on the recruiting trail after flipping fourstar athlete Collins Acheampong from Michigan on Tuesday, and they’re taking swings at several Patriots, including four-star running back Mark Fletcher and five-star wide receiver Brandon Inniss, who has orally committed to Ohio State.

Brown, the Hurricanes hope, will still be part of a programchanging haul in Miami-Dade County.
