Duke transfer has perfect day as UM women stay perfect

Duke transfer Shayeann Day-Wilson had her best outing in a University of Miami uniform so far with a perfect shooting day as the Hurricanes routed Eastern Tennessee State University 68-44 on Sunday in the final of the Miami Thanksgivi­ng Tournament.

Day-Wilson came off the bench and went 7-for-7 from the field (5-for-5 from deep) for 19 points, tying Shenise Johnson and Kelsey Marshall for the third-best shooting performanc­e from beyond the arc in Miami history. The Canadian junior guard also had three assists.

UM improved to 5-0, the third time under coach Katie Meier that the team won its first five games.

Day-Wilson was a big get for Meier in the transfer portal. She was the top Canadian guard in the class of 2021 and was named All-ACC Freshman of the Year in 2021-22 at Duke. She averaged 8.1 points and 2.9 rebounds as a sophomore before leaving for Miami.

All 10 Hurricanes scored Sunday as the team shot 57.5 percent from the field and 56 percent from three-point range. Ja’Leah Williams had nine points. Lazaria Spearman added five points and seven rebounds.

Miami hits the road for the first time this season with a Wednesday night game at 25th-ranked Mississipp­i State (7-0).

MEN’S BASKETBALL

No. 19 Florida Atlantic 84, Virginia Tech 50: Vladislav Goldin, a 7foot-1 center, scored 14 points on 7-for-7 shooting and keyed a suffocatin­g defense with three blocks as FAU won the ESPN Events Invitation­al championsh­ip game in Kissimmee.

The Owls (5-1) got a game-high 17 points and eight rebounds from Alijah Martin.

Virginia Tech (5-2) saw its four-game winning streak broken. The Hokies, normally a good shooting team, missed their first 15 three-pointers.

NBA investigat­ing Thunder player: The NBA is investigat­ing allegation­s that Oklahoma City guard Josh Giddey, 21, was involved in an inappropri­ate relationsh­ip with a minor.

Suggestive pictures of Giddey and an allegedly underage girl circulated on social media last week. The age of consent in Oklahoma is 16.

“We’re looking into it,” a league spokesman said by text message Friday to The Washington Post.

Giddey played in Saturday’s 127-123 home loss to Philadelph­ia. He declined to discuss the situation when asked about it by reporters.

Elsewhere: Atlanta starting forward Jalen Johnson is expected to be out four to six weeks after an injury to his left wrist, The Athletic reported Sunday. He was injured in Atlanta’s 136-108 victory over Washington on Saturday. Per the report, tests did not reveal any broken bones and he won’t require surgery. Johnson, 21, is averaging 14.1 points,

7.3 rebounds and 2.4 assists this season, and has started 12 of 15 games.

Formula One: Max Verstappen concluded the year with a record-extending 19th victory of the season at the Abu Dhabi GP, the Associated Press reported. He finished ahead of Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and Mercedes driver George Russell.

Verstappen now has 54 wins, just ahead of Sebastian Vettel and trailing only Michael Schumacher (91) and Lewis Hamilton (103).

NHL: Colorado defenseman Samuel Girard will be away from the team for treatment in the NHL/ NHLPA Player Assistance Program, the league and union announced.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter) the 25-year-old said the decision was "proactive" and that he was "entering treatment for severe anxiety and depression that has gone untreated for too long and led to alcohol abuse."

Tennis: Italy won its first Davis Cup title since 1976 with a 2-0 victory over Australia in Malaga, Spain, the Associated Press reported. Jannik Sinner beat Alex de Miñaur 6-3, 6-0 in the second singles match of Sunday's final.

Matteo Arnaldi had given Italy the first point with a 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 win over Alexei Popyrin.

The Italians had lost the last three finals it played against Australia, which was last year's runner-up to Canada. Sinner helped Italy defeat Novak Djokovic's Serbia in the semifinals Saturday.
