Jags’ Lawrence says his injured ankle feels much better than he expected
Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence sat out practice Wednesday with the ankle injury he suffered Monday night but said he feels “a lot better” than he thought he would at this stage.
Lawrence sustained a high-ankle sprain during the team’s 34-31 overtime loss to the Cincinnati Bengals. But coach Doug Pederson isn’t ruling Lawrence out for the 8-4 Jaguars’ game against the host Cleveland Browns (7-5) on Sunday.
C.J. Beathard, who replaced Lawrence on Monday night and led the Jaguars to a game-tying field goal in regulation, would get the start if Lawrence is unable to go.
Lawrence was walking without a protective boot Wednesday.
“I feel a lot better. I feel better than I would have thought I’d feel,” Lawrence told reporters. “I’m very fortunate. I’m thankful that there wasn’t a worse injury.”
But he said he wouldn’t rush back if that put him or the team at risk.
Lawrence has 3,004 yards passing, 14 TDs, seven interceptions and a 94.4 passer rating on the season. He also has 248 yards rushing with four scores on the ground.
Browns: QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson returned to practice, taking the field for the first time since suffering a concussion Nov. 26.
Thompson-Robinson remains in concussion protocol and last played in a game when he exited the 29-12 loss to Denver in the third quarter.
The Browns return home on a two-game losing streak to face Jacksonville on Sunday.
Joe Flacco operated the first-team offense in Wednesday’s practice on the heels of his start in last week’s loss to the Rams in Los Angeles.
Coach Kevin Stefanski didn’t say who would start Sunday. He said “we’ll see how it goes” with Thompson-Robinson back on the field but not fully cleared.
Cowboys: Coach
Mike McCarthy was in a hospital Wednesday, awaiting surgery for acute appendicitis. He was expected to be released later in the day and anticipated that he’ll be on the home sideline Sunday night for the team’s important rematch with Philadelphia.
Coordinators Dan Quinn (defense), Brian Schottenheimer (offense) and John Fassel (special teams) will run practice the next several days in McCarthy’s place.
Jets: In the latest quarterback soap opera, New York is turning back to Zach Wilson.
On Wednesday afternoon, coach Robert Saleh announced that Wilson will start Sunday’s home game against Houston.
Trevor Siemian will back up Wilson, and Brett Rypien, who was signed Tuesday, will be the emergency quarterback.
Recent starter Tim Boyle was waived this week.
“Zach gives us our best chance to win,” Saleh said. “We are giving him another opportunity to go prove that.”
Saleh also said Wilson “God willing” would be the Jets starter for the rest of the season.
Following Aaron Rodgers’ Achilles injury Sept. 11, Wilson started nine consecutive games. He was benched for Boyle in a Week 11 loss to Buffalo.
