Dolphins’ search for D-coordinator widens
The Dolphins are set to interview two more candidates for their defensive coordinator opening, while one name linked to the job is staying with his current team.
The Athletic reported that Miami will interview Baltimore Ravens associate head coach/defensive line coach Anthony Weaver, and NFL Network reported that the Dolphins plan to interview Houston Texans linebackers coach Chris Kiffin.
Meanwhile, NFL Network reported that the Buffalo Bills are promoting linebackers coach Bobby Babich to defensive coordinator. The Dolphins reportedly requested an interview with Babich.
Weaver, 43, just completed his second season coaching in Baltimore. He served as the Texans’ defensive coordinator in 2020, a season in which Houston ranked 27th in points allowed and tied for 29th in yards per play allowed.
Weaver has coached for 12 seasons in the NFL, also spending time with the Bills, Cleveland Browns and New York
Jets.
He was on the same Cleveland staff as Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel in 2014; Weaver was the defensive line coach and McDaniel the wide receivers coach.
A second-round pick of the Ravens in 2002, Weaver played sevens season as a defensive lineman in Baltimore and Houston, recording 265 tackles and 151⁄2 sacks.
Weaver interviewed with the Atlanta Falcons and Washington Commanders for their headcoaching vacancies.
Kiffin, 42, just completed his first season as the Texans’ linebackers coach.
He spent the previous three seasons as the Browns’ defensive line coach and also worked as a pass-rush specialist for the San Franciso 49ers in 2018 and 2019, overlapping with McDaniel when he was run-game coordinator.
Kiffin also spent more than a decade coaching in the college ranks, which included serving as defensive coordinator of Florida Atlantic in 2017.
Kiffin is the son of longtime NFL defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin and the younger brother of Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin.
The Dolphins have also expressed interest in former Los Angeles Chargers head coach Brandon Staley, former Bills defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier and two internal candidates, linebackers coach Anthony Campanile and outside linebackers coach Ryan Slowik.
