Lourdes will play Varela for District 16-6A soccer championsh­ip

The Lourdes soccer team advanced to the final of the District 16-6A Tournament, where the Bobcats will play Varela for the girls’ title.

Lourdes beat Southwest easily, while Varela had a much tougher test against Miami Beach, winning by just a goal. In a District 15-6A semifinal, South Broward edged Krop,

In District 13-3A girls, Chaminade-Madonna advanced to the semifinals with a shootout win over host Calvary Christian. Lions keeper Maxima Carabajal made a huge save in the shootout to seal the exciting victory.

It also came down to PKs as goalkeeper­s Teagan Lavin (Key West) and Heidi Schultz (MAST) did not allow a goal in regulation nor overtime in a District 16-4A semifinal. Key West out scored MAST 4-2 in the shootout.

In District 14-3A, Edison (13-0) remained undefeated while advancing to the finals. Cypress Bay improved to 13-0-4 with a District 14-7A semifinal win.

On the boys’ side, Miami Beach reached the District 16-6A final with a shutout win over Mater Academy. In a District 14-4A semifinal, Cardinals Gibbons got a big win over North Miami Beach.

In a couple of girls’ victories, Gulliver Prep freshman Mikayla Brown scored 15 points with 7 rebounds and 6 assists against Marathon, and North Miami sophomore J’adore Hayes totaled 31 points with 25 rebounds, 5 blocks and 5 steals versus Edison.
