- Field Level Media

John P. Angelos has agreed to a $1.725 billion deal to sell the Baltimore Orioles to private equity billionaires David Rubenstein and Mike Arougheti, Puck News reported Tuesday.

Rubenstein, a Baltimore native, previously showed interest in buying the Washington Nationals.

According to Puck, the group will start off owning roughly 40 percent of the club. When Angelos’ 94year-old father, Peter Angelos, dies, Rubenstein and Arougheti will buy the remaining 60 percent.

A sale requires approval by Major League Baseball. The owners are scheduled to meet next week in Orlando.

John P. Angelos has been the team’s chair and managing partner since 2020 as his father suffers from dementia.

Orioles legend Cal Ripken

Jr. is believed to be part of the group buying the team.

Padres: The team reached agreement with free agent reliever Wandy Peralta on a four-year, $16.5 million contract,

The Athletic reported. Peralta, a 32-year-old lefty, went 4-2 with a 2.83 ERA and four saves in 63 appearances for the New York Yankees last season.

Rangers: Shortstop

Corey Seager will miss most of spring training after having surgery to repair a sports hernia Tuesday. He is expected to be ready for Opening Day.

NBA

Embiid hurts knee: Philadelphia center Joel Embiid was scheduled for an MRI exam Wednesday after suffering an apparent left knee injury in a loss at Golden State on Tuesday night.

If he is sidelined for an extended period, he would lose his eligibility for the MVP award and all-NBA teams. Under new guidelines put in place this season, players must appear in at least 65 games to qualify for end-of-season awards. Embiid has missed 13 games and would be disqualified if he misses five more games.

The 76ers (29-17) suffered their fourth straight loss and slipped to fifth in the East standings. Their fate this season has been tied directly to their franchise player’s availability. Embiid has appeared in 34 of 46 games this season: Philadelphia is 26-8 with him in the lineup and 3-9 without him.

Draft will be two nights: The NBA is expanding the 2024 draft to a two-night format June 26-27, the league announced. The first round will be at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. The second will be at ESPN’s Seaport District Studios in Manhattan.
