St. Brendan, Western win state cheerleadi­ng titles

St. Brendan and Western won state titles during the FHSAA State Cheerleadi­ng Championsh­ips at the RP Funding Center in Lakeland.

St. Brendan finished first in the Class 1A Extra Large Division. Western placed first in the Class 2A Medium Coed Division.

At state, of the 210 teams competing from all classifica­tions and divisions, St. Brendan scored the highest with 93.7 points. The Sabres, who also won regionals, have now won eight state titles in competitiv­e cheerleadi­ng.

This is Western’s first state title in competitiv­e cheerleadi­ng. The Wildcats won districts and regionals en route to state.

This marked the first time Lourdes cheerleadi­ng was second at state. The Bobcats won regionals to qualify for state.

Of 25 teams in its division, Douglas scored 91 points at state, just twotenths of a point behind state champ Durant-Plant City. The Eagles were second of 18 teams at regionals to advance to state.

The two-day state event featured top region qualifying teams from throughout Florida.

Miramar was one of them. Coach Tanya S. Jones noted her Patriots became back-to-back district champs, placed third at regionals to qualify for state and then finished sixth of 30 teams at state.

Freshman Mikayla Brown led the Gulliver Prep girls’ basketball team with 22 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists in a District 16-4A quarterfin­al win over Key West.

Senior teammate Allison Podvin added 19 points, including five 3-pointers in the second half.

LaSalle boys’ soccer advanced to the region semifinals in Class 3A where it will play Divine Savior on Friday. The Royal Lions shut out Don Soffer Academy, while Divine Savior edged Palmer Trinity.
