Palmer Trinity girls win another district basketball title

The Palmer Trinity girls’ basketball team won its fourth district championsh­ip in the past five years.

In the District 16-3A final, the Falcons defeated Somerset-Homestead 51-46. Senior Jade Leon led the way with 23 points, and freshman teammate Emma Esparza added 7 points, 9 rebounds, 6 assists and 3 steals.

In the boys’ Region

4-4A final on Wednesday, two unbeatens will battle. Gulliver Prep, ranked No.1 nationally, is 22-0-1 with its lone tie at 1-1 against Downtown Doral in its regular season finale. Mater Lakes Academy is 14-0-1 with a scoreless tie against Don Soffer Aventura. The Bears beat Don Soffer Aventura 3-2 prior. They are on a 10-match win streak.

In the boys’ Region

4-3A final on Wednesday, Downtown Doral (16-4-1) takes on Divine Savior (13-3-1). The Dolphins shut out host NSU University 1-0 in a region semifinal, and Divine Savior also recorded a shutout in a

2-0 win over LaSalle. Downtown Doral, which is unbeaten in its past six games (including tying top nationally ranked Gulliver Prep), defeated Divine Savior 2-0 in the district final.

In the boys’ Region

4-2A final on Wednesday, Scheck Hillel (11-3-1) competes against Highlands Christian (17-7-1).

The Lions won two region games by 8-0 scores. They are on a 7match unbeaten streak, tying Palmer Trinity during that stretch. Mater Lakes Academy and LaSalle edged them by one goal each prior, and Krop beat them 2-0 earlier in the season. Highlands has won five of its past six games.

In the girls’ Region 4-3A final on Wednesday, NSU University School battles undefeated Edison. Winners of their past six matches, the Sharks (14-3) shut out Coral Springs Charter for the second time in the post-season to advance to the region final. Edison (16-0) continues its breakout season, after eliminatin­g Somerset-Homestead by one goal and Ransom Everglades in a shootout.

In a girls’ Region 4-2A final on Wednesday, the South Florida HEAT plays True North. The HEAT (23-2-2) is unbeaten in its past six games. The Titans (12-2-2) have won five of their past six.

WATER POLO

The Belen Jesuit boys’ water polo team went 3-1 at the Wildcat Tournament at Winter Park HS near Orlando.

After losing the first game to Dr. Phillips-Orlando 10-3, the Wolverines beat SeminoleSa­nford 15-3, Oviedo 12-5 and Winter Park 8-7. Winter Park, which defeated Dr. Phillips, is one of the best teams in the state.

Leading Belen were Xavier Caceres, Hector Santaella and goalie Austin Marrero.

The Gulliver Prep girls’ water polo team edged Lake Brantley at the Wildcat Tournament. The Raiders also beat Oviedo, while the Gulliver Prep boys’ team also won two games there.
