True North boys’ basketball wins third straight title

The True North boys’ basketball team made history by becoming the first three-peat district champion in school history.

The Titans defeated Westwood Christian 71-60 in the District 16-2A final.

True North went ahead 15-5 in the first quarter, thanks to its defense. Trailing by 12 at halftime, Westwood made a run to trim the deficit to two points by the end of the third quarter, 46-44. The Titans finished strong in the fourth quarter, outscoring Westwood 25-16 to secure the victory. Both teams advance to regionals.

In District 16-4A boys, Gulliver Prep is the champion, beating St. Brendan in the final. Jacob Marquez, Jackson Mansfield and David Flores-John paced the Raiders.

In the District 16-6A girls’ final, Shanaii Gamble had a double-double with 22 points and 14 rebounds to lead Southridge over Lourdes.

Trailing 15-11 after the first quarter, the Spartans went on a 23-13 run in the second quarter, and won each quarter in the second half. For Lourdes, Luciana Picasso also recorded a double-double with 18 points and 14 rebounds.

REGION SOCCER

Miami Beach boys’ soccer advanced to a Region 4-6A semifinal by beating Coral Park 4-2 in a shootout.

Miami Beach scored first with a goal from Daniel Jurado off an assist by Tomas Cortez. In the second half Coral Park scored on a corner kick to tie the game.

Miami Beach dominated the remainder of the game, missing a penalty kick with 10 minutes left in regulation. The Hi-Tides had a couple other chances, too, to put the game away, but the post denied them twice. After two scoreless overtimes, Miami Beach won in a shootout.

The Hi-Tides (16-5-1) play St. Thomas Aquinas on Friday in a region semifinal. The Raiders (19-5-3) handily beat McArthur 9-1.

On the other side of the bracket, Krop (12-2-2) shut out South Plantation, and South Broward (16-1-3) edged Deerfield Beach 1-0, setting up that Friday showdown.

In a girls’ Region 4-7A quarterfin­al, Doral Academy shut out Palmetto 2-0.

Rachel Brown scored in the first half on a penalty kick, and Catherine Cabrera added an insurance goal in the second half with the assist to Daniela Todd. Keeper Ayla Ramos recorded 3 saves en route to the shutout.

Doral will play Cypress Bay on Friday in a rematch of one of last year’s semifinal matchups which Cypress Bay won 1-0.

In its 5A region quarterfin­al game, the unbeaten Lightning (15-0-4) easily defeated Flanagan 7-0.

American HeritagePl­antation girls began its region journey with a convincing 7-0 win over Rockledge. The Patriots (12-3-1) next face Merritt Island (13-2-2) in another region semifinal on Friday. The Mustangs shut out TERRA 3-0 to advance to Friday’s game.

In 6A, Lourdes breezed by South Broward with the Bobcats giving coach David Fique his 50th win.

On Friday, Lourdes (15-2-1) plays Fort Lauderdale, 4-2 winners over Varela. The Flying L’s

(8-8) overcame a 2-goal deficit against Varela. Last year Fort Lauderdale reached regionals for the first time in school history. This year the Flying L’s eclipsed that feat.

DISTRICT WRESTLING

The Mater Lakes Academy girls’ wrestling team did a lot with a little, placing second of 12 teams at a district tournament.

The Bears were outstandin­g, especially considerin­g only six girls (of 14 weight divisions) competed in this region type qualifier at South Broward HS. Each won an individual district title, with every match won by pin.

Sofia Ferran (110 weight class) became the first girl in school history to win districts three times.

The Stoneman Douglas boys’ team added to its team district titles, placing first at the District 13-3A Championsh­ips. The Eagles scored 220 points, 17 points better than Coral Springs, which finished ahead of Fort Lauderdale by three points.

Douglas dominated the light weights, while Coral Springs took individual titles in the mid/midupper weights. Overall, the Eagles had six district champs and Coral Springs four.
