West Broward wins major cheer titles

The West Broward

High School competitiv­e cheerleadi­ng team won a national title and a world title in the Coed Non Tumbling Division at ESPN’s Wide World of Sports in Orlando.

This marked the first time the Bobcats won nationals, and they became the first Broward team to win nationals and worlds.

The champs are Brady Brocato, Annabella Maldonado, Briana O’Connell, Allan Ascencion, Avigail Batista, Jasmine Bolanos, Ella Castillo, Kendall Zack, Leyani Garcia, Nylah Harper,

Ava Dominguez, Emma Fernandez, Melanie Zimmerman, Hailey Sarmiento, Lexine Fenton, Dior Watson, Rhema CruseChipm­an, Camila Fuentes, Lundyn Schor Haskin, Stefanie Ion; Ariana Aguirre.

The coaches are Danielle Culbertson, Amber San Angelo, Carlos Hechavarri­a, and Corey Jackson.

Prior to nationals, West Broward won districts and regionals. Because of a technical issue, they placed fourth at state. In program history, the Bobcats have won six state titles and finished runnerup at nationals twice (2022 and 2023).

WRESTLING DISTRICTS

The Somerset Academy-Pembroke Pines team won its 10th district championsh­ip in 13 seasons. The host Panthers advanced 13 to the District 15-1A finals with 7 winning championsh­ips, 6 runners-up and 1 in third place.

All 14 Somerset wrestlers qualified for regionals at Jensen Beach.

Westminste­r Christian and Florida Christian battled for runner-up honors with the Warriors (and three district champs and one runner-up) edging Florida Christian (six runners-up) by two points.

The Cardinal Gibbons wrestling team easily won the District 14-1A title.

BASKETBALL POSTSEASON

The Norland boys’ basketball team won its 15th consecutiv­e district title, defeating Archbishop McCarthy 68-59 for the District 15-5A Championsh­ip.

Trailing by three at halftime, Norland out scored the Mavericks in the third and fourth quarters en route to the historic title with Coach Lawton Williams at the help for all of them.

In the semifinals, Norland beat Central 67-57. Archbishop McCarthy defeated Somerset Academy-Pembroke Pines

70-56. In the quarterfin­als, the Mustangs eliminated North Miami 68-21. Norland earned a bye.

Following districts, Norland continued its winning ways with a region quarterfin­al win over Somerset Academy-Pembroke Pines 74-67. The Vikings (17-10) will play on Tuesday in a region semifinal against Northeast (18-10), overtime winners over Archbishop McCarthy, 66-64.

SOCCER REGIONALS

Lourdes beat Fort Lauderdale to reach another Region 4-6A girls’ final. There the Bobcats (16-2-1) face St. Thomas Aquinas (12-4-2) on Wednesday.

Lourdes defeated the Raiders three of the last four seasons in a region final.

In Region 4-7A, Stoneman Douglas (14-1-2) plays unbeaten Cypress Bay (16-0-4) in the region final Wednesday. The Eagles beat Coral Reef in a region semifinal, while Cypress Bay eliminated Doral Academy.

In Region 4-5A, Pembroke Pines Charter battles American HeritagePl­antation with the region title and a trip to the state semifinals on the line on Wednesday. The Jaguars (11-3-2) edged Archbishop McCarthy in a shootout in a region semifinal. American Heritage (13-3-1) shut out Merritt Island 3-0 in the other region semifinal.
