Mets’ Senga (shoulder) might miss opener

- From Miami Herald Wire Services

New York Mets No. 1 starter Kodai Senga had a platelet-rich plasma injection in his right shoulder and won’t throw for at least three weeks, all but assuring that he won’t take the mound as the team’s Opening Day starter.

Manager Carlos Mendoza told reporters at spring training Sunday in Port St. Lucie that Senga had returned to camp after traveling to New

York for diagnosis and treatment.

Senga, 31, was diagnosed with a moderate posterior capsule strain last week. Mendoza said the hope is that the shot will accelerate the healing.

“Let the shot do the work and the once we start ramping up his throwing program we’ll have a better idea how he’s bouncing back and all that,” Mendoza said.

Once doctors give him the OK to throw, he still will need the time he would have had in spring training to prepare for the regular season, meaning he likely will be on the injured list when the Mets open the season March 28 at home against Milwaukee.

Senga was an All-Star and finished second in National League Rookie of the Year voting last year after going 12-7 with a

2.98 ERA in 29 starts. He threw 1661⁄3 innings.

He pitched for 11 seasons in Japan before signing with the Mets. He is expected to anchor a rotation that includes Jose Quintana, Luis Severino, Sean Manaea and Adrian Houser.

Dodgers make deal, bring back Kike Hernandez: The Minnesota Twins are acquiring outfielder Manuel Margot from the Los Angeles Dodgers for middle infielder Noah Miller, according to multiple reports.

The trade gave the Dodgers a spot to bring back free agent Kike Hernandez, the super utility man who played with Boston and the Dodgers last season.

Margot, 29, is in the second year of a two-year deal worth $19 million with a team option for 2025.

A native of the Dominican Republic, Margot played his first four seasons (2016-19) with San Diego and the next four for Tampa Bay.

Margot joined the Dodgers via trade during this past offseason, arriving with right-handed pitcher Tyler Glasnow and cash for outfielder

Jonny DeLuca and righthander Ryan Pepiot.

Compiling a career slash line of .255/.309/.385, Margot has 91 stolen bases to complement his 52 home runs and 283 RBI over 788 regular-season games.

Miller, 21, was a firstround pick (No. 36 overall) by the Twins in 2021. He has yet to rise above Class A in his three professional seasons.

Hernandez provides depth on the stacked Dodgers roster, slashing .257/.343/.458 against lefties during his 10-year career.

Cardinals: St. Louis is expected to sign long-time San Francisco Giants infielder Brandon Crawford, pending the completion of a physical.

Crawford, 37, is expected to compete for a backup infield spot, likely behind rookie shortstop

Masyn Winn.

Crawford, a three-time All-Star and four-time Gold Glove winner, has played all 13 of his bigleague seasons with the Giants, who selected the UCLA product in the fourth round of the 2008 draft.

Cubs: Former Marlins first baseman Garrett Cooper signed a minorleague deal, Miami Herald contributor Craig Mish reported. Cooper, 33, hit a career-high 17 home runs last season in 81 games with Miami and 40 with San Diego. He was dealt to the Padres on Aug. 1 in a deal that brought pitcher

Ryan Weathers to Miami.

Dodgers: Shohei Ohtani will make his Dodgers’ spring-training debut Tuesday against the Chicago White Sox. The teams share the facility at Camelback Ranch in Glendale, Ariz.

Ohtani will be the designated hitter as he plays in a game for the first time since signing a 10-year, $700 million deal in the offseason. It will also mark Ohtani’s first game action since undergoing his second career Tommy John surgery on his right elbow in September. Ohtani will not pitch this year.

Red Sox: First baseman Triston Casas will be away from the team for a few days because of the flu, manager Alex Cora said. Casas, 24, hit .263 with 24 home runs, 21 doubles and 65 RBI in 132 games in 2023, his first full season. He was drafted 26th overall in 2018 out of American Heritage High School in Plantation.
