Sarah Schmelzel birdied two of her final three holes on Thursday to take a one-stroke lead after the first round of the HSBC Women’s World Championship in Singapore.

Beginning on the back nine, Schmelzel overcame a bogey on the par-4 No. 12 to record five birdies and finish at 4-under-par 68 at the Sentosa Golf

Club — The Tanjong Course.

“It was good. A little shaky at the start, the front nine made some good par saves, three of them scattered over the front nine,” Schmelzel said. “Everything felt good.”

Schmelzel, who is bidding for her first LPGA Tour win, kicked it up a notch during her final nine holes on Thursday. She made two birdies on her first two holes of the back nine and three more over her final five holes.

Schmelzel leads Lilia Vu, Sweden’s Linn Grant and Germany’s Esther Henseleit by one stroke heading into the second round.

College basketball: Caitlin Clark broke three records, posted her second straight tripledouble and closed within 18 points of first place on the NCAA Division I career scoring list as No. 6 Iowa walloped host Minnesota 108-60 late Wednesday. Clark finished with 33 points to put her at 3,650 for her career, surpassing Lynette Woodard (3,649 points) for the most points in AIAW majorcollege women’s basketball history, set before the NCAA era. The reigning national player of the year also eclipsed the Big Ten record for the most career threepointers (497 by Ohio State’s Kelsey Mitchell) and set the NCAA women’s record for most triples in a season at 157, trumping the previous mark of 154 (Taylor Pierce, Idaho).

On Thursday, Clark announced that she will enter the 2024 WNBA Draft, making a foregone conclusion official and signaling the end of a historic college career.

NBA: The Atlanta Hawks waived veteran

Patty Mills and converted the contract of fellow guard Trent Forrest from a two-way deal to a standard pact. Mills, 35, is averaging 2.7 points, 1.1 rebounds and 10.6 minutes in 19 games off the bench this season. He is shooting 37.3 percent from the floor and 38.2 percent from three-point range.
