COHEA baseball rallies for walk-off win against Varela

Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the seventh, the COHEA baseball team rallied (walk-off style) to edge Varela 2-1.

Varela scored once in the top of the sixth for a 1-0 lead. For COHEA in the seventh, Rolando Mena scored the tying run, and Jose Aviles had the winning run.

In other action, McArthur scored five runs in the top of the fifth, and Dr. Krop scored four times in the bottom of the sixth as the Mustangs (7-1) held on for a 5-4 victory.

Palmetto hosted Covenant Day from Texas and recorded a 4-1 victory to improve to 5-3.

After a tough, close loss to the nation’s fifth-ranked IMG Academy-Bradenton, Doral Academy bounced back with a nice win over Westminste­r Christian. The nation’s 17th-ranked Firebirds are 9-1.

TENNIS

The Gulliver Prep girls’ tennis team remained undefeated with two more victories, including a close win over Miami Country Day.

GIRLS: Gulliver Prep 4, Miami Country Day 3: No.1 Gabrielle Bassette (MCD) won 8-5; No.2 Maya Quintero (GP) won 8-2; No.3 Hanna Matuk (GP) won 8-2; No.4 Kayla Carey (GP) won 8-1; No.5 Laura Solorzano (GP) won 8-2. GP 6-0.

GIRLS: Gulliver Prep 5, Palmer Trinity 2: No.1 Melina Ruiz (PT) won 8-2; No.2 Maya Quintero (GP) won 8-2; No.3 Hanna Matuk (GP) won 8-2; No.4 Kayla Carey (GP) won 8-0; No.5 Sophia Harari (GP) won 8-1. GP 7-0.

WATER POLO

The Belen Jesuit boys’ water polo team competed in the Gulliver Invitation­al in Miami.

The Wolverines defeated last year’s state champ St. Thomas Aquinas 12-5.

The state’s top ranked team Dr. Phillips-Orlando edged Belen 16-15, and in overtime, West OrangeWint­er Garden beat the Wolverines 11-10. MAST Academy also beat Belen 12-7.

A few days later on senior night, Belen defeated Miami Country Day 16-12.
