NSU University School’s Taylor Smith is the Broward 4A-2A Girls’ Soccer Player of the Year
Taylor Smith started playing soccer and achieving success at a very young age.
It’s a trend that’s continued in high school for the NSU University School girls’ soccer standout.
That’s clearly evident in Smith’s already long list of accomplishments despite being only a sophomore.
Smith has led the Sharks to two trips to the state final four.
And now she can add Broward County Player of the Year honors to that list.
After scoring 24 goals and recording 33 assists, Smith is the Miami Herald’s top player for Classes 4A-2A.
One special accolade is missing so far and Smith plans to change that in the near future.
“We’re just going for that ring,” Smith said. “I’ve got two shots left at it.”
That state championship bling that Smith is referring to has eluded the Sharks during her first two seasons of high school.
But like Smith, University
School hopes it is laying the foundations for longlasting greatness.
After falling short in the state final last season, Smith saw several of her teammates suffer seasonending injuries heading into the playoffs.
Smith had a big part in keeping University School on course to advance to the state tournament once again. But eventually the lack of depth derailed the Sharks’ hopes of winning it all this season.
Smith, however, is one of the most talented young players in the state and part of a roster that graduates only three seniors, giving University high hopes that it can end its title drought next season.
“Coming off our last season and making the state finals, the goal was to make it as far as we could and we almost did,” Smith said. “Even with three starters down, we were able to accomplish much. It’s a good feeling knowing we could still be a team, even without some key players able to be there.”
