Abdullah leads Doral softball over Coral Springs Charter

Anabela Abdullah hit a walk-off 2-run home run as the Doral Academy softball team edged Coral Springs Charter 3-2 in eight innings.

Scoreless through five innings, Doral took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the sixth. The Panthers evened things in the top of the seventh, forcing an extra inning.

Coral Springs Charter went ahead 2-1 in the top of the eighth, setting the stage for an exciting Firebirds walk-off win.

MORE SOFTBALL

Cypress Bay softball defeated Stoneman Douglas 5-1.

The Lightning scored two in the bottom of the second, one in the fourth and two more in the sixth. Douglas managed a run in the seventh to avoid a shutout.

Cardinal Gibbons then edged Cypress Bay 5-4. Trailing 4-1, Cardinal Gibbons scored three times in the bottom of the third to even things. The Chiefs scored the winning run in the fifth.

In another close battle, Miami Christian defeated Pembroke Pines Charter 2-0. The Victors scored both runs in the top of the third.

And in eight innings, Archbishop McCarthy edged St. Thomas Aquinas 4-3. Tied at two, Archbishop McCarthy (6-3) went ahead 3-2 in the top of the seventh, but the Raiders (6-6) managed to score in the bottom of the inning to extend into an extra inning.

Trailing 4-2, SomersetPe­mbroke Pines plated six runs in the top of the sixth to defeat AIE 8-4.

Filippo Baldassarr­i, 17, is a junior, playing his first season for the Eagles. He is from Montelabba­te,

Province of Pesaro and Urbino, Italy.

This right-handed pitcher is 6-foot-1, 170 pounds. He is learning the English language, while playing the game he loves in America, choosing North Broward Prep to continue his athletic endeavors on the diamond. He is inspired by his father, who played baseball in Italy.

The Eagles are 10-2.

Miami Country Day senior forward Kayla Nelms was named Florida Dairy Farmers Class 3A Girls’ Basketball Player of the Year. St. Thomas Aquinas senior forward Khadee Hession was named the state’s Class 6A Girls’ Basketball Player of the Year. Schoolhous­e Prep senior guard/forward Adena Webster is the state’s Class 2A Girls’ Basketball Player of the Year.

They are eligible for Florida Dairy Farmers (Overall) Miss Basketball honors.

Nelms led her team to its second straight Class 3A state title by averaging 14.3 points, 10.4 rebounds, 1.1 assists, 1.7 steals and 1.8 blocks per game. Signed with Baylor University.

Khadee Hession led her team to its fourth straight Class 6A championsh­ip by averaging 18.6 points, 6.8 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 3.5 steals per game. Signed with Georgetown University.

Adena Webster averaged 23.5 points, 13.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 2.1 steals per game. Signed with Temple University.

Ochiel Swaby of Miami Country Day is the Florida Dairy Farmers Class 3A Girls’ Basketball Coach of the Year. Oliver Berens of St. Thomas Aquinas is the state’s Class 6A Girls’ Basketball Coach of the

Year, and Greg Farias of American Heritage-Plantation is the state’s Class 5A Girls’ Basketball Coach of the Year.

They are eligible for Florida Dairy Farmers (Overall) Girls’ Basketball Coach of the Year honors.

SOCCER HONORS

American HeritagePl­antation’s Cindy Marcial, the 2024 Florida

Dairy Farmers Class 5A Girls’ Soccer Coach of the Year, finished sixth in the voting for state’s overall girls’ soccer coach of the year honors.

Dave Silverberg, who guided Ponte Vedra to a 22-1-1 record and the Class 6A state championsh­ip, won his second title in the past four years and his second state Coach of the Year honor (2021).
