If there was a team in Broward County this season that had a go-to player in a tough spot, it was Cardinal Gibbons.

And that reliable player was 5-10 junior combo guard Kayla Greyvensteyn.

While Greyvensteyn often filled up the stat sheet, her most important attributes included her unselfishness and ability to make the right play whenever the Chiefs needed it.

“She led us in every statistical category,” Cardinal Gibbons coach Kevin Gordon said. “Her work ethic is superior, and she makes everyone around her better.”

Greyvensteyn’s tremendous season earned her the Miami Herald’s girls basketball Class 4A-2A Player of the Year honors for Broward County.

She averaged 19.8 points, 9.5 rebounds, 5.7 assists and 4.3 steals per game.

Greyvensteyn put together 30-point games on three occasions and guided the Chiefs to a district championship and an 18-4 record.

The Chiefs advanced to the Class 4A regional semifinals before losing to state semifinalist Miami SLAM Academy.

Although Gibbons failed to return to the state final four this season as it had in the 2022-23 campaign, Greyvensteyn is all about the team concept on a talented squad that should have a shot to return next season.

“Being named Player of the Year means to me that all the hard work I put in through my whole life has paid off,” she said. “I couldn’t have done it without my coach and teammates that pushed me every day.

“It’s truly a great accomplishment that shows the amount of hours I put in day in and day out through my junior year and how much I’ve grown as a player from last year.”
