Edison upends top-ranked Palmetto in flag football

- Miami Herald Staff Reports

The Miami Edison girls’ flag football team came from behind to defeat the state’s No. 1 ranked Miami Palmetto 13-12.

This huge win went to the final seconds, where Edison’s defense stopped Miami Palmetto near the Red Raiders’ 1-yard line to assure victory.

Palmetto took the opening possession and mounted an 8-play drive with QB Ava Alvarez ending it on a touchdown pass to Melanie Assmar covering 18 yards for a 6-0 lead.

Ashey Alvarado’s interception set-up Palmetto’s next score as she returned the pick to Edison’s 4-yard line. On 4th and goal, Alvarez threw her second touchdown pass, this time two yards to Serenity Simon. Extra point no good and Palmetto led 12-0.

Edison goes 3-and-out and punts. Palmetto moved upfield to Edison’s 15-yard line. On second down, Camille Candidate intercepted Alvarez’s pass to stop the drive and turn the momentum around. The Red Raiders then went on a key 6-play, 71-yard drive, capped off by a Raykia Louis 20-yard touchdown pass to Mikayla Miller just before halftime. Extra point no good, and Edison trailed 12-6.

Edison took the lead in second half. Louis tossed a touchdown pass to Alana Johnson to even things at 12. Louis then completed an extra-point pass to Imani Rogers for what proved to be the winning margin.

Late in the game, Palmetto drove 55 yards, but its game winning drive attempt ended near the endzone, when Edison’s Jahzara Sivlera made a diving flag pull at the Red Raiders’ 2-yard line on 4th and goal from the 1-yard line with seconds remaining to seal the exciting victory.

Miller led Edison on offense with five catches for 80 yards and a touchdown.
