Marlins end 7-game losing streak with 10th inning win
The Miami Marlins — who trailed by five runs entering the ninth inning — got a walk-off single to right by Dane Myers in the 10th inning as they rallied to defeat the Colorado Rockies 7-6 on Tuesday night.
Miami snapped a seven-game losing streak, which had been the longest active skid in the major leagues.
Myers went 2 for 2 with three RBI. He entered the game in the seventh after Jazz Chisholm Jr. was ejected for arguing a strikeout on a close pitch.
Bryan De La Cruz, who tied the score in the 10th on an RBI double off the fence in left, scored the winning run on a close play at the plate. Catcher Elias Diaz likely would have had the out, but he dropped the ball.
Rockies starter Ryan Feltner pitched a careerhigh eight innings, but he got a no-decision. Through those first eight innings, he allowed just three hits – all singles.
But he was removed from the game in the ninth after he allowed the first three hitters to reach — a single, a hit by pitch and Luis Arraez’s RBI double.
The Marlins pounced on reliever Justin Lawrence, who gave up a two-run single to Myers, an RBI hit by pitch to Jesus Sanchez and Emmanuel Rivera’s sacrifice fly.
Reliever Jalen Beeks (2-2) entered the game, and he struck out Nick Gordon and got Christian Bethancourt out on a drive to the warning track in left.
Rockies left fielder Jordan Beck singled in his first MLB bat, belting a 1-0 slider to center as part of Colorado’s five-run first.
Through the first eight innings, Miami managed singles by Josh Bell in the second, Vidal Brujan in the third; and De La Cruz in the seventh.
Bell was erased by a double-play grounder, and Brujan was caught stealing. De La Cruz’s hit was a swinging bunt.
Marlins starter Sixto Sanchez threw 25 firstinning pitches — 21 of them for strikes. It’s possible he threw too many strikes as the Rockies jumped on his arsenal.
That started with leadoff batter Ezequiel Tovar, who doubled on the game’s first pitch. Ryan McMahon and Charlie Blackmon drilled twostrike RBI singles to give Colorado a 2-0 lead, and Montero’s three-run homer to center traveled 409 feet with an exit velocity of 107.6 mph. That made it 5-0.
After Miami rallied to tie the score in the ninth, Colorado took a 6-5 lead on McMahon’s RBI double off Tanner Scott (1-4) in the top of the 10th inning.
