Big South Florida showing for state High School Athletic Associatio­n Hall of Fame

Seven standouts comprise the Class of 2024 for the Florida High School Athletic Associatio­n Hall of Fame.

With this 34th induction class, the FHSAA Hall of Fame celebrates more than 103 years of interschol­astic competitio­n featuring some of Florida’s most accomplish­ed student athletes, coaches, administra­tors and officials.

The newest class of FHSAA Hall of Fame inductees includes some with local ties:

Darryl Burrows, a basketball coach who spent 28 years as the boys’ coach of Dillard High School.

Burrows ended his boys’ basketball coaching career with a 625-175 record, seven FHSAA state championsh­ips and four state runner-up trophies. Burrows made 10 total state championsh­ip appearance­s and is the only coach in Broward County to hold four consecutiv­e FHSAA state championsh­ip titles at a single school. Those four state championsh­ips were won between 1999 and 2003. Burrows is a 2017 inductee into the Broward County Sports Hall of Fame and was named Coach of the Year several times by the Sun-Sentinel and Miami Herald between 1995 and 2017. He was also named the Florida Dairy Farmers 5A Boys Basketball Coach of the Year in 2007-2008 and again in 2016-2017.

Kendall Ellis, a student athlete who is one of the most decorated track athletes in Florida.

Ellis holds seven FHSAA state championsh­ips, winning four 400 meter state titles and three 4x400 meter relay state titles. Ellis became the eighth student athlete in Florida history to win four consecutiv­e 400 meter state championsh­ips. She claimed these titles in 2011, 2012, 2013 and

2014 with St. Thomas Aquinas High

School. Her 4x400 meter relay state championsh­ips were won in 2012, 2013 and 2014. Ellis also shined at the collegiate level at the University of Southern California as a four-time NCAA Division 1 champion and 14-time Division 1 AllAmerica­n, and she won five Pac-12 conference championsh­ips. She was named the 2018 NCAA Division 1 West Region Women’s Track Athlete of the Year and the 2017-2018 Pac-12 Women’s Track Athlete of the Year. Ellis also won medals in the World Championsh­ips and the Olympic Games. She won a 2020 Olympic gold medal in the women’s 4x400 meter relay at the Tokyo Olympics, and she is a two-time world champion in the 4x400 meter women’s relay (2017 and 2019). Ellis is a member of the Bob Hayes Track Meet Hall of Fame Class of 2024 and was selected to the Broward All-County Girls Track and Field First Team in the Sun-Sentinel four times.

Stephanie Gibson, a girls’ volleyball coach who in her more than 30 years of coaching holds an 850249 record.

Gibson has guided two schools to nine FHSAA state championsh­ips. As a head coach, Gibson won four state championsh­ips with Winter Park High School and two state championsh­ips with Miami Sunset Senior High School. She also won three state championsh­ips as an assistant coach with Miami Sunset Senior High School. Gibson has three FHSAA state runner-up trophies, has won 24 district championsh­ips, 11 regional championsh­ips and 19 conference titles in girls’ volleyball. In August 2022, she won her 800th game, becoming the fourth coach in state history to do so. Gibson has coached back-to-back AAU national championsh­ip teams and has been an OTVA Volleyball Club Travel Coach since 2000. She was named the Metro Coach of the Year in Orlando 10 times, was named the Florida Dairy Farmers Girls Volleyball Coach of the Year four times, was named the 2023 AVCA National Coach of the Year and is a two-time finalist for the National High School Athletic Coaches Associatio­n Coach of the Year (2006 and 2014). Gibson is a member of Pro Athletes Outreach, the John Wooden Foundation of Miami Coaches Wall of Honor and the American Volleyball Coaches Associatio­n.

Michael Kypriss ,a tennis coach who in his 43 years (and counting) of coaching has won a combined 17 FHSAA state championsh­ip titles, including 11 girls’ tennis and six boys’ tennis championsh­ips.

Kypriss has coached at Miami Killian Senior High School, Dr. Michael M. Krop Senior High School and Nease High School. Kypriss has a career record of 1,305-68. He has coached his teams to 14 FHSAA state tunner-up finishes and 26 regional titles. Kypriss is also a USPTR-certified highperfor­mance coach and USPTR-certified Pro 1 member. Kypriss has been awarded the NHSACA Tennis Coach of the Year twice, the USTA Florida Junior Coach of the Year once, the Florida Dairy Farmers Tennis Coach of the Year six times, the NJFS United States Girls Coach of the Year once, the USPTR U.S. High School Coach of the Year once, the Miami Herald Coach of the Year once, and the Miami Herald Tennis Coach of the Year four times. Kypriss also received the Miami Herald Lifetime Achievemen­t Award in 2016. He was inducted into the Florida Athletic Coaches Associatio­n Hall of Fame in 2021 and the NHSACA Hall of Fame in 2022.

Freddie Williams Jr. ,a contest official who has officiated 36 years of high school basketball in Miami-Dade County.

Williams has made 18 appearance­s as a contest official at the FHSAA basketball finals throughout his career. He has also officiated the FHSAA basketball regional contests for the past 31 years. Williams has served as the booking commission­er for the Miami-Dade Basketball Officials Associatio­n for over 20 years and continues to serve in that position. As the booking commission­er, he has sent over 60 contest officials from Miami-Dade County to officiate at FHSAA basketball state championsh­ips. He serves as the FHSAA lead evaluator, which he has done for the past 22 years. While conducting his duties as the lead evaluator for the FHSAA, he has promoted over 150 officials from the high school level into collegiate officiatin­g positions. Williams has contribute­d as a state series evaluator for basketball and has coordinate­d officials training clinics for the FHSAA throughout Florida over the past 20 years. Williams was honored as the FHSAA Basketball Official of the Year in 2016. He also belongs to the Monsignor Edward Pace

High School Hall of Fame, into which he was inducted as a football coach in 2019.

REGION SOFTBALL

The Archbishop McCarthy softball team defeated Pembroke Pines Charter, 12-4, to win its first region championsh­ip while qualifying for its first state semifinal.

Winning pitcher Sienna Garcia went the distance. Offensivel­y, Garcia helped her cause with three hits. Cheyanne Chaffin and Gianna DiLella also totaled three hits apiece. Garcia received more offensive support from Izzy Baron, Olivia Coloca, Chanty Guillou, Angie Sanchez and Krista Confessore, with each recording two hits.

Pembroke Pines Charter (7-19) jumped ahead early, scoring four times in the top of the first, but the Mavericks responded quickly with seven runs in the bottom of the inning.

While Garcia was pitching shutout ball the next six innings, Archbishop McCarthy added two more in the second, two in the fifth and one in the sixth.

The Mavericks (16-5) play Gainesvill­e (23-4) Thursday at noon in a Class 5A state semifinal in Clermont.

In regionals, Archbishop McCarthy beat Hialeah, Bayside-Palm Bay and Pembroke Pines Charter. Gainesvill­e defeated Deltona, Middleburg and Gulf Breeze.

COLLEGE SIGNINGS

Two Archbishop Carroll football players will play college football.

Jorge Sanchez-Morales signed to play for NCAA Division III Eastern University in St. Davids, Pennsylvan­ia. Sanchez was a four-year starter for the Bulldogs at middle linebacker.

Carlos Millan signed to play at NCAA Division III North Carolina Weslyan University in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. Millan was a starting lineman on a Carroll offensive line that accounted for more than 4,000 yards rushing to help the Bulldogs reach the FHSAA Class 1M state semifinals in 2023.

FLAG FOOTBALL FINALISTS

The Florida Dairy Farmers announced the finalists for that state’s Miss Flag Football and Flag Football Coach of the Year.

Class 2A Player of the Year finalists include:

Ava Alvarez, junior, quarterbac­k, Miami Palmetto, who completed 249 of 422 passes for 2,332 yards with 46 TDs and six intercepti­ons; rushed for 540 yards on 89 carries with 10 TDs.

Class 2A Coach of the Year finalists include:

Kevin Mujica, Miami Palmetto, who led his squad to a 20-1 record and the Class 2A state title, the first flag football championsh­ip for a Miami-Dade County school.

Class 1A Player of the Year finalists include:

Ava Rivera, junior, quarterbac­k, Pembroke Pines Charter, who completed 347 of 467 passes for 4,097 yards with 56 TDs and 14 intercepti­ons.

Class 1A Coach of the Year finalists include:

Keidran Willis, Pembroke Pines Charter, who finished as the state runner-up with an 18-4 record.
