The Mu­seum of Con­tem­po­rary Art toasted its 50th birth­day and the de­but of its lat­est ex­hi­bi­tion, “Takashi Mu­rakami: The Oc­to­pus Eats Its Own Leg,” with a star-stud­ded bash. Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Kerry James Mar­shall, and He­bru Brant­ley were among the no­table at­ten­dees to fête Mu­rakami, who treated guests to a spe­cial pre­view of his ret­ro­spec­tive be­fore the evening’s el­e­gant tented dinner in Lake Shore Park. Af­ter re­marks by MCA Di­rec­tor Madeleine Gryn­sztejn and a video mes­sage by the evening’s mu­si­cal cu­ra­tor, Phar­rell, Janelle Monáe closed out the soirée with a spir­ited per­for­mance for the crowd of more than 600.
