Kunia Landscaper Wins Grant

MidWeek Islander (West Oahu) - - News -

The Oahu Resource Conservation and Development Council recently awarded $194,000 in agricultural development grants to seven Oahu businesses, including Takenaka Landscaping Company Inc. in Kunia.

Takenaka Landscaping will use its money to develop and install a streamlined production system for landscaping plants and organic vegetable seedlings for homeowners, landscapers and farmers. The vegetable seedlings also will be used on a 10-acre farm for organic vegetable production.

It is the company’s goal to provide the farm and homegarden community the chance to purchase healthy vegetable starts grown in locally produced organic potting mixes, as well as a wide variety of potted landscaping plants.

Individual awards ranged from $4,400 to $40,000, to support the expansion of existing poultry, aquaponic, aquaculture and nursery operations as well as the completion of both a food safety-certified processing facility and a commercial kitchen. Funding for the program is provided by the USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service.

A new round of funding is anticipated in spring 2011.
