ROMANCE IN THE FROSTY AIR Galena Country

NOSTALGIC SHOPPING

Stroll city sidewalks dressed in holiday style along Galena’s Main Street, lovingly called the Helluva Half-mile. Nearby towns beckon, too. Christmas in Elizabeth (December 1), offers holiday deals, crafts and treats, plus the decked-out 1876 Banwarth House and Museum. During the Warren Festival of Trees, (December 1– January 6) browse shops and see trees in the historic Community Building. At the Stockton Christmas Walk (December 8), watch for store “snowmen,” Little Jack Frost and Miss Merry Christmas. FIRE SO DELIGHTFUL

Smoke on the water? Maybe. Fire in the sky? Yes. Watch fireworks over the Galena River in Grant Park (December 1). Or marvel at 5,000 luminarias lining Galena streets for Night of the Luminaria and Living Windows (December 8).

SNOW JAMS

Ski or snowboard Chestnut Mountain Resort’s 19 runs and terrain park. Or ride a horse-drawn sleigh at Shenandoah Riding Center. The trip’s about an hour. (You stop for cocoa by the fire.)
