2 FERRY TO AN ISLAND Leave your cares (and maybe your car) behind with a ride to a vacation accessible only by boat. Beaver Island sits 32 miles from the mainland in Lake Michigan. CHARLEVOIX, MI STROLL AN ANCIENT REEF 4 Time travel 390 million years back at Falls of the Ohio State Park, where amateur paleontolo­gists can hunt for 600-plus different types of Devonian fossils on rock beds washed clean by the Ohio River.
