Pence suffers broken left arm

- San Jose Mercury News, AP

The San Francisco Giants’ Iron Man will begin the season on the disabled list.

Hunter Pence broke his left forearm and will be sidelined six to eight weeks after being hit by a pitch in the sixth inning of the San Francisco Giants’ 8-6 win over a Chicago Cubs splitsquad on Thursday in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Pence was struck by a pitch from Cubs minor league right-hander Corey

Black. He usually sprints to first base after he’s hit by a pitch but stayed down for several seconds before he began walking toward the base. Giants manager Bruce

Bochy left the dugout during the game and visited Pence in the training room.

“You know Hunter. He’s always upbeat and optimistic,” Bochy said. “He was trying to move out of the way. It ran in and caught him there. It happens. If it is broken, the silver lining is at least it’s early in the spring, so he can start the healing process.”

Pence famously has played in every game since joining the Giants at the July 31 trade deadline in 2012. His active streak of 383 consecutive games played is the longest in the majors and also ranks as the third longest in Giants history.

Stanton steps to the

plate: Despite not getting a hit, Miami Marlins slugger

Giancarlo Stanton was pleased with his first atbats of the spring.

Stanton went 0 for 2 against St. Louis in his first game since being hit in the face by a Mike Fiers fastball in a game with Milwaukee at Miller Park last September.

“I felt good in the box,” Stanton said. “We’re right on track. It was good to be in a game setting again.”

Stanton said that too much was being made of his comeback from the injury. He was wondering when everyone will stop asking him about how he feels.

“I guess I’ve got to get a hit first,” Stanton said.

Harvey to make his return: It’s hard to know which opponent will be more challenging for Matt

Harvey on Friday — the Detroit Tigers or his own competitive nature.

The New York Mets’ ace is set to pitch in his first game in 18 months and the outing will be anything but the usual March start.

Harvey’s all-star season was cut short after a loss to the Tigers on Aug. 24, 2013, when it was discovered he had a tear in an elbow ligament. He had surgery on Oct. 22, 2013.
